Bench - Floyd, Ward, Theriot, Blanco, 1 more (Pagan, Cedeno, Perez in the mix).

If Murton, Floyd, Ward, Soriano and Jones are all on the opening day roster. I have to think they'll go with another infielder there. Theriot can't be the only backup.

Probably. I would guess Cedeno would have the edge. Ward can play first. The Riot can handle 2nd, short, or 3rd if necessary. I would rather see Ronny playing in AAA, but I want no part of Perez on this team, so I guess I'll root for Cedeno.

Looking at that OF the Cubs don't really have a true CF'er. I hope Soriano and on occasion Jones can handle it.

For the money it's not a bad signing but to me, this means that Murton will not be getting the majority of ABs unless of course Jones is traded which is a possibility. Now is FLoyd an upgrade over Floyd? I don't know.

Why does it mean that? That would run contrary to everything Piniella and Hendry have been saying-they want Floyd to be the 4th OF, not take away most of Murton's AB's.

I hope you're right but we've seen Murton split time before and who knows if Floyd accepted knowing he would be a 4th OFer or not. I don't know.

3MM base? I'd be curious to see how the incentives are broken down.

Please don't say broken down in a Floyd thread!

I hope he doesn't think he's going to get 500 AB's at the expense of big red.

I'm pretty sure you can't take your walker to LF, so I think Murton's ABs are relatively safe.

Probably not but I really don't understand why he signed with the Cubs since they don't have a DH, there must have been very little interest or he just wanted to play in Chicago.

I like this signing very much. And to those who think it will take AB's from Murton, I disagree, I have heard nothing but positive remarks from JH and Sweet Lou.

I hope to see Murton in LF, Soriano in CF and a platoon with Jones/Floyd in RF.

Go Cubs!

Floyd has said that the Cubs are the team he wants to sign with since the beginning of the offseason-he probably had better offers elsewhere (since there was a report that several teams were after him a few days ago) but Floyd really, really wanted to come to Chicago.

If that's the case I would be happy but we'll see how it works out. When healthy Floyd id good, when healthy(not much).

He's from the Chicago area.

I wonder if he worked out for the Cubs at all? I'm sure they went over his medical records pretty well.

Muskat says Murton will likely platoon in LF and be a bench option.

*&%$!!!

Oh well, Murt will just have to outplay his geriatric wrinkled hiney. Lou isn't Dusty. Performance actually matters.

What's that going to look like? They're both lefties.

why wasnt he signed before the Cubs Convention so someone could go ask Pineilla about it

I don't think she has a freaking clue. Lou and Hendry have been singing a Murton lovefest the last few weeks. If anyone loses tons of at bats to Floyd, it's Jones.

Muskat is clueless. THis is a good signing if Lou uses Floyd off the bench and when someone needs a rest. I have heard nothing but praise from both Hendry and Lou all off-season about Murton. I think even if Floyd is named starter, Murtons play will keep him in the lineup.

I don't see the point of platooning Floyd and Jones. The only reason either is valuable is they can hit RHP well.

Well I am glad to be wrong. If healthy Floyd is productive. Too much talent is a "problem" that usually resolves itself. And I am confident that Pie will have a spot very soon.

If Floyd is made a starter, he'll get injured anyways and Murton will replace him. I highly doubt Floyd starts the year as a starter, either in right or left.

I don't think Floyd will platoon with anyone, but I think he will replace Jones in the lineup far more often than he replaces Murton. If our outfield is healthy I expect Soriano to play every game, Floyd to start 10-15 times for Murton and Floyd to start 20-25 times for Jones. That said at some point there will be injuries to deal with and this will work it self out through injuries and production.

She mentions platooning with Murt. However, that seems like a dumb idea.

2006:

Floyd = .266 OBP-.342 SLG-.423, Murton = .295 OBP-.354 SLG-.426 vs rhp

And that is in almost the same amount of AB's

Of course it's dumb, that's why people don't want to see it happen. But it's highly unlikely Floyd would take Jones's time. Floyd is strictly a LF, and both are left handed. His only real shot at starting is in the place of Murton.
