OK...I'm a conspiracy guy and I'm wondering, is it possible that illegal/performance drugs are behind the delays? Don't these guys have to pass a phsyical and at that physical do they have to be tested? Is it possible the teams are waiting for the crud to clear so they test ok?

With Bonds, it's more to do with the contract language. From what I've read, none of the big name Giants' aquisitions have actually signed because of it.

With Drew, the Red Sox have some serious concerns over the shoulder and want to insert language to protect them in case it becomes a problem. Boras has resisted the inclusion of that language.

There have been a couple of articles I've read that give conflicting reasons for why the Giants haven't signed Bonds yet.

Some contend that with his most recent amphetimine failure, the Giants are looking for a way out of the agreement. Others have said that several free agents the Giants agreed to in principle have yet to formalize their contracts due to some specific language the Giants want to put in there.

Either way, the NY Timestoday posted an article proposing that the Red Sox could sign Bonds if the Drew contract goes south.

Did Drew get hurt last year? I just don't remember him hurting it last year.

I heard that on Mike and Mike. The difference being Drew can actually play defense but it is the NY Times. Imagine Bonds and Manny on the same team?

I was thinking personality wise those two would be quite a handfull but as you said, that lineup woould be too. The only thing to me is it after Bonds took the ampetimines that he started to hit again? Remember, he wasn't doing so well earlier in the year.

I don't remember where I read it, but I saw a rumor that if Bonds doesn't re-sign with the Giants, they might be interested in Jacque Jones.

Imagine that defensive alignment. Manny in right? Bonds in left? I feel sorry for their pitching staff and centerfielder.

I'd imagine that Papi would have to play 1B and Bonds would DH

And that will move Lowell (with his good defense) to the bench allowing Youkilis and his not so good defense to play third. I'd still hate to pitch with that defense, but man the offense would be absurd with four guys who could put up a four hundred on base percentage.

According the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are discussing walking away from the agreement with Bonds.

Link.

On Wednesday, the New York Times reported the Giants put the brakes on negotiations and quoted an unnamed lawyer on the Bonds side as speculating the Giants might want to back out of the deal following the fallout from last week's revelation that Bonds failed an amphetamine test and initially blamed it on a substance he took from teammate Mark Sweeney's locker.

In an interview Wednesday, general manager Brian Sabean declined to address the Times story or whether he is exploring alternatives to signing Bonds. Sabean merely reiterated the club's official position, saying, "The player is unsigned and contract issues remain unresolved. That hasn't changed."

Let's play worst case scenario for Bonds: the Giants don't sign him, leaving him a free agent. Do you think there's a team willing to take on the freak show that's turned into his quest to hit 756?

He'll come back to Pittsburgh to break the record where his career started.

The 'Roids should keep him going through '09, too.

If given the choice between Floyd and Bonds, give me the freak.

From an objective point of view, sure.

But if his hometown team that's suffered through his steroids scandal isn't willing to take a chance on him, will anyone else in the league?

I guess the overall question is: despite his ability, will there be a market for Bonds with the stormclouds over his head?

Yes.

Whether that market would result in a contract that Bonds would see as worth working for is another question.

On XM175 Baseball AM this morning it was discussed that Bonds want the Giants to hire part/all of his "staff" as clubhouse personnel. The Giants are saying no, and heck no. The speed story is just further cement for the Giants.

so which is it? do steroids decrease the length of your career or extend it?

yesyesyes. if a player can't stay healthy, people say the steroids killed him. if a player never gets hurt, they say the steroids make him super strong. it seems unlikely that both would be true.

They decrease the length of your life while extending your career.

Seems quite likely that not all users are taking the same thing, and not all bodies respond exactly the same way.

"Steroids", in the general sense, can lead to your body breaking down, but they can also help you recover from normal wear and tear, and prolong your peak.
