I didn't see this posted yet--it's from an article in the tribune.

Both Duffy and McLouth are lefties and are 26-27yrs. old, but they have not proven a thing yet in the majors. The Cubs deserve more in return for Jones--even if the salary swing is over $5 mil. This would be a really bad deal, in my opinion.

They'll probably want money and a prospect.

I really can't think of anyone on that team or in their system who'd be worth Jock and would be useful to the Cubs. McLouth and Duffy are trash.

Trading Jock for spare change is fine with me--IF the Cubs already have their 3rd OF on hand. Make a trade for Ryan Church, or even better, Rocco Baldelli, and I'll send Jock to Pittsburgh for peanuts, why not? If nothing else, you recover $5MM in payroll expense. Don't forget, Jones was signed as a free agent, so there are no sunk costs with him, we didn't give up any players to get him, so we shouldn't be too upset if we get nothing for him, either.

Some forget that the only reason we have Jones in the first place is that Hendry had an awful offseason last year and found himself in the pickle of needing to choose between Jock, Juan Encarnacion, Preston Wilson and Jeremy Burnitz. In hindsight, Hendry picked the least of these evils, but I care less if Jock leaves as suddenly as he arrived. Once we have his replacement.

Keep Jacque. He'll be fine.

I wonder when people will stop calling him "Jock" though.

when he makes me feel like he deserves two more typing motions.

27 HR and .833 OPS for $5mil doesn't deserve 2 more typing motions?

And I'll be ok with trading jones when we get someone who can hit 20HR atleast and ~.800 OPS. Or if not atleast a high OBP to make up for a lack of either. Until then, KEEP JONES!! He's a very good #5 hitter!

Everything that I read has the Bucs very high on Duffy. I dont think they would see the point in trading him for Jacque. I agree with the 3 team deal though. We could add ourselves into the LONG LONG ongoing Pitt/ATL deal.

LaRoche, Cedeno, and Jacque to Pitt

Gonzalez, Duffy, Moore, Ryu-ish to ATL

Andruw to the Cubs

Atlanta is going to want a lot more than that to give up LaRoche and A. Jones. Keep in mind they turned down Gonzalez for LaRoche straight up...and this deal only adds Moore, Duffy and Ryu going to them, which isn't enough to make them part with A. Jones.

A more likely three-way would be:

LaRoche and J. Jones to Pittsburgh.

Duffy, Veal, Gonzalez, Marshall, and Novoa to the Braves.

A. Jones to the Cubs and the Cubs also offering Jones an 18 million option for 2008 with a 5 million buyout. What that would do is raise Andruw's salary to the level of the recent FA but still give him the option of testing the market. I think he'd waive 10-5 for that.

I agree. One of Hendry's weaknesses is that he seems to feel it's necessary to trade a player once he decides (for whatever reason) that the player should be traded. There's the old saying that "sometimes the best trades are the ones you don't make", and this might be a perfect example. I understand that Jones wants out and Hendry has given his word that he would try to trade him, but Jones is a decent OF and shouldn't be traded away for nothing. Get a decent replacement and get something of value for Jones or keep him.

If I were a betting man, I'd put good money on Jones not coming close to last year's production. Don't be surprised to see a sub-.320 OBP from him this year.

And no one who puts up a .334 OBP is a "very good #5 hitter".

Is there a way to see what the average #5 hitter in baseball did? Then we'd know for sure how good Jock is. Besides, there is more than one way to look at a player. OBP, while good, is not the only way and that's something any knowledgeable baseball fan---sabermetrian or not---can agree on.

And "Jock" is a nickname. Why change?

The most convenient is to look at team offensive stats in the #5 spot. Jones's .834 OPS ties him for 14th of 30 teams. His .334 OBP would be 25th. The Cubs were 29th and 30th in these two categories respectively.

McLouth? Utility outfielder.

Duffy? Jury is still out. He hit 340 or so when he first came up in '05. And, after his tantrum last year, he played all right. His ability to run down fly balls is very good and he seems to have a decent arm. And, he can steal a couple of bases for you, too.

Will he be an all star? No. An everyday outfielder? If he can get his [expletive] together, then yes, he can be a pretty good one. The cubbies should make this one, if only to get some potential for a player you're trying to move anyway.

Not sure if this is a good trade for the Pirates however. Duffy is the closest thing we have to a leadoff hitter and an every day Center fielder. But, Jones hit 27 HRs, and if he plays the same as last year, with the short right field, there's reason to hope he can hit a a couple more.

And ,the same short right field wall will hide some of the defensive short comings.

LaRoche and J. Jones to Pittsburgh.

Hmm. Can Freddy Sanchez play Center field? An interesting lineup...

Sanchez

Wilson (There's only one now, no need for a first initial.)

LaRoche

Bay

Jacque

Paulino (He who hit .310 last year)

Bautista (Who'd probably play center?)

Castillo

(Other possibilities are Castillo on the bench, Bautista and Sanchez and 2nd & third, Nady in Left, Bay in Center)

Not a bad lineup.

From Sullivan's latest,

Jacque Jones still is on the roster and Cliff Floyd isn't, though their situations are almost certain to be resolved before spring training. Floyd already has told friends he intends to be a Cub, while Jones isn't expected at the weekend convention, indicating he's likely on his way out of town.
