Jones is just taking his time until Lovie becomes available on Monday.

How does he become available?

Cha ching. Money talks and if the Cowboys want him I'm sure they'll "contact" him and let him know that the money is there for him. If the Bears decide to go on the cheap or in their words a "fair" price they may lose out on Lovie. I know he has a year left in his deal but something may be worked out. I like Lovie and I think he is a very good coach but the Boys may make a very good offer that the Bears my accept. This all depends on 3 things:

-Do the Bears lowball Lovie

-Is Lovie really interested in going to Dallas

-Is Jones willing to pay the picks for Lovie

While I think Jones is more than willing to pay the $$ for Lovie, I don't think he's willing to pay with picks. It's not his way. Jones has always believed the talent on the field is more important than the coach.

My guess is that after interviewing Singletary, Jones will attempt to hire both Turner and Singletary away from the 49ers. I think his true desire is for Turner to come aboard to groom Garrett and have Singletary run the defense. Garrett and Singletary would give the Cowboys two young talents on each side of the ball and the one who shows the most promise would end up becoming the next coach when Turner steps down.

I thought I had heard that Singletary could only leave the 49ers to become a head coach somewhere. This is due to his having the title "assistant head coach."

I could be wrong on this, though.

John Clayton reported earlier that the Cowboys probably only interviewed Singletary to comply with the "Rooney rule". While they already might have been covered due to their interview with one of their assistants, the NFL might have encouraged to interview another candidate, and Singeltary was a logical choice to bring in, as he will likely get a job somewhere in the next couple of years.

Lovie to the Cowboys is more of a media driven rumor than anything else. All indications are that the Cowboys are going in another direction. Lovie a mortal lock to be extended by the Bears.

Probably. What is the relationship between Lovie and the Bears owner and GM'?

lovie was with angelo in tampa and was brought in by the man, who was desperate to get rid of hatley-hire jauron, going so far as to sabotage the 2003 bears by cutting ted washington, and watching the defense fall apart. i'll never forgive angelo for that, he's a low-down dirty piece of human garbage for stabbing jauron in the back like that--it was as transparent as you can get.

.

Wow...you can't be serious with that post.

It was awful seeing Jauron continue his miserable existence on the basis of a fluke 13-3 season. Jerry's hand was forced, honestly, I would have cut Jauron right after 2002 and that miserable season Awful, awful awful coaching.

He had 4 losing seasons and one good season. Great. He was AWFUL.

Yep.

Dick Jauron...nice guy...bad coach.

2001 was one of the biggest fluke seasons in the history of the NFL.

It appears that the Cowboys plan to interview Rivera and Colts QB coach Jim Caldwell on Monday.

Link.

He was the QB coach-he's still officially listed as that, but really he's simply the top assistant to the team at this point.

Right now, Jones' sole focus is on Romo's development which I think might hurt the team overall. Turner seems to be the way he's leaning because of this, and he's a solid offensive mind but a horrible HC. Turner also told Jones he'd want to bring in Rivera as DC if he gets the HC job. I'd personally like to see Phillips get the job if he can bring in a good staff, though that concerns me because he's already lost Manusky and there's no guarantee that Nunnely would come with him. He does have a more positive HC history and experience with the 3-4 and with Garrett already on board I don't think we need an offensive HC necessarily.

He also has the title of Assistant Head Coach. He served as head coach in December 2005 for the game Dungy missed because of his son's death.

Man, I hope the Cowboys take Riveria...please take him. PLEASE!

I'm not dying to get rid of him, but I wouldn't be upset about losing him. I just wonder who Lovie would promote to defensive coordinator. I'm guessing Babich, but not sure.

Whoever he promotes will be running the Cover 2 no matter what, so does it really matter?

It matters. The Bears aren't a 100% cover 2 team. There does need to be some strategizing by the d coordinator.

my point is just that the overall defensive strategy won't change much. It's not like they're going to move to a 3-4 or something next year.

No, it probably won't change. But that doesn't mean the defensive coordinator doesn't matter.

It's looking like Wade Phillips will be named the HC of the Dallas Cowboys. Garrett will be OC. It's not clear who will be named the DC.

I think Rivera said he didn't want to just coach the defense and then Jerry made his move towards Phillips. Hey, maybe Coach P will be the head guy on D!

If anyone is promoted from within to DC, it will be Bowles.

Your feelings on Wade being HC?

I wouldn't know like you would, I was just rooting for Coach P. Who was the D guy in 2006?

Zimmer had been the DC since 2000.

I like him better than I'd like Turner as HC.

My concern with Phillips has more to do with Garrett than Phillips. I figure that Phillips will do a good job working with the defense and that Dallas will find ways to bring pressure with his schemes.

On the other hand, there's really no one there to mentor Garrett with the offense. Hoepfully he's ready, but he hasn't had a lot of experience.

Zimmer who left to join the Falcon's staff. He was a hold-over and never felt really comfortable with Parcell's switch to the 3-4.

Who were you wanting in there? And what did you think of Ron Rivera as a candidate?

Just curious for a Cowboy fan perspective.

From an outside perspective, it seems to me the Cowboys really like Garrett and were looking for more of a place holder to coach until they felt Garrett was ready. Am I right or totally off here?

I had never settled on one candidate. I could see pros and cons of both. Of the people they interviewed, I think I like Phillips the best. I'm just nervous with Garrett and the offense. He may do great, but it's a huge unknown. I would have loved a situation where Norv returned as an OC as I like his play-calling. I'm just not sure he can be an effective HC.

My concern with Rivera was that the Cowboys have spent the last three years making the switch to the 3-4. I'm not sure we have the personell to go to the 4-3, cover-2 scheme right now. Rivera likely would have made that switch, and I'm not sure that would be a good thing right now.

One thing I like about Phillips is that with his age, it will be easy to hand the job over to Garrett when (or if) he proves he's ready.

I was intriqued by the idea of Singletary as HC.

I think you are right on the money. Also, I heard that Norv was the front-runner, but made some demands that negotiated himself out of the job.

Norv didn't want to give much control on the offensive side to Garrett. Turner wanted to run things rather than be a mentor-HC to Garrett. Turner also said he wanted TO gone, and it appears Jerry would rather not part ways with Owens. Furthermore, Turner wanted some of the same controls over personell that Tuna had, but I don't think Jerry trusted Turner with that venue as much as he was willing to defer to Parcells. All in all, Turner made too many demands to be a good fit.
