It's also worth noting that this clown's blank submission also penalizes guys like Andre Dawson, Jim Rice and other deserving players that aren't in the Steroid Era that he himself defined as 1993-2004.

why should we just assume rice and dawson were clean if we're assuming gwynn and ripken might be cheaters?

We shouldn't necessarily, but if you're doing this specifically about the Steroid Era, and he claims he is, then you should evaluate the other candidates at least. If he wants to cast doubt on everyone, say so.

Hah, that Red Sox sycophant Peter Gammons voted for Rice but not for Dawson. Dawson was easily an all around better player with a slight advantage going to Rice for pure hitting. Rice only stole 58 bases compared to Dawson's 300+, and Rice had 0 gold gloves compared to Dawson's 8.

I think a lot of these guys vote from their heart rather than facts. I just can't care about the HOF. People like Ron Santo, who not only have HOF credentials as a baseball player, but has dedicated his entire life to the sport, aren't in the Hall, therefore it loses a lot of its meaning, IMO.

Horrible sentence structure. My apologies in advance because I'm not going to go back and fix it. :D

The steroid era is considered to be 1993-2004. The trouble with his logic is that baseball had no policy against PED's for that period. No policy means that you cannot hold a player accountable for what he might or might not have done. It's a stupid, moralizing witch hunt undertaken by people who grew up with the fairy tale notion of what baseball actually is. Those people are now sportswriters, and have taken it upon themselves to decide who and who is not a "cheater", using rumor, innuendo and their eyes to jump to conclusions that I'm sure are 90% incorrect.

Show me the rule in the MLB rulebook telling HOF voters what they can and cannot vote for. There is none because the two orrganizations don't work on the same system. You can get fired from your job for some things, arrested for others, and not get hired for still others. Character being one of the criteria for voting, it's relevant. Still, this is hysteria when compared to other forms of cheating. Probably something that has to do with out visceral reaction to artificial modification of the human body.

Now why on earth would the "steroid era" be 1993-2004?

For that matter, how can we know anyone, from any era, was clean. There were illegal drugs back in the early days that might have improved performance, but the scientific community didn't test for them. If a writer has a problem voting for any player, that's fine, but to turn in a blank ballot thereby casting doubt on all players is wrong.

I think you need to define the Steroid Era, and then just vote for the best players from that era. If someone actually has a positive steroid test on their record, then fine, don't vote for them, but until someone like McGwire, Sosa, etc. has a positive test, then they remain among the best power hitters in history.

BTW, I think 8 voters didn't vote for Ripken, so the asshat in Illinois isn't the only guy
