The Angels and Rockies have resumed discussing a Todd Helton deal more than 2 1/2 weeks after talks originally broke down.

The Rockies weren't going to pick up enough of the $90.1 million Helton is owed over the next five years to get a deal done the first time. However, it's GM Dan O'Dowd who got the ball rolling again, offering to eat a little more salary and take a lesser third player than Jeff Mathis. The Rockies would want both Casey Kotchman and Erick Aybar in a trade, but that probably won't be a sticking point. A trade still seems like a bit of a long shot. Even if all of the hurdles are cleared, Helton could use his no-trade clause to block a deal. Dec. 22 - 12:29 pm et

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that upgrading from Darin Erstad to Todd Helton would be somewhat of an improvement.

Very true. But wtf happened to Helton's power last year?

My HR contest ballot begs the same question

He clearly took steroids but somehow gets away with it

Helton had some crazy stomach condition (possibly a parasite?) that sidelined him for a long time. After returning to the lineup, he was never at 100%. Selfishly, I hope the Rockies don't trade him. Helton is one of the only recognizable players here, and when he's on, he's a total masher.

Let's avoid Salem witch trials, please. As you may have read in my other post, Helton had a scary stomach condition. For awhile, it looked like he was deathly ill and possibly finished as a ballplayer.

To say that steroids was the issue proves one's ignorance, as well as one's willingness to jump to an inaccurate conclusion.

Well, he may not have, but I think it's equally ignorant to totally dismiss it. It was mentioned at the time steroids was a big issue, but he got dismissed pretty quickly, probably because he plays in Colorado. Should Giambi get a pass because, he too, got violently ill and had his power sapped? I know nsbb doesn' t really steroid accusations but, to me, he's one of the people who should be considered an obvious candidate, yet somehow gets ignored.

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic. OT - I'm here in Denver visiting/meeting my girlfriend's family and can't get out of here until Tuesday, which sucks. But I have to say, this city is beautiful. Haven't seen much of downtown besides a couple of bars last night. Some place named Opal is hands-down the most hilarious bar I've been to - and that counts townie southern Indiana bars. It's like a trendy-but-feels-like-a-cocaine-scene bar with a collection of bad characters from a really crappy movie, my favorites last night being the drugged-out asian guy all in white wearing a low hat with a cohort all in black, ski cap to boot, who would disappear whenever the other guy said something to him and mysteriously reappear 5 minutes later. Very weird scene. Not worth the saki. Hope you enjoyed the rant.

Helton has been the face of the organization for a number of years, in fact, there have been more years of the Rockies with Todd Helton than without. If he can reclaim his power stroke and put up a few more years with the kind of peripherals he has, he'd be a lock for the HOF. Most likely he'll be the first Colorado player to be enshrined at Cooperstown (Larry Walker is the only other one with an outside shot, imo) so I think he should stay put.

On topic, Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd has denied re-initiating Helton trade talks with the Angels (per Rotoworld). He has no idea who came up with that report - or why.

Off topic, I'm glad that you're making the best of your being trapped in Denver. Luckily my roommate has a Jeep, so we've been able to explore the insanity of the blizzard. My car has RWD, so I'm just hopeful I'll be able to break out of my driveway by Christmas.

Opal is truly a unique bar (and right near my old place). If you're looking for more hip - or bizarre - places to grab a drink, try heading down to LoDo. Tryst is hip, and I dig the Tavern Downtown as well as the cowboy place next door. El Chapultapec (right across from Coors Field at 20th and Blake) is a famous jazz bar, with live music, cheap burritos, and the honor of being named one of Playboy's "best bars" in the nation.

Enjoy the rest of your stay!

From Aurora, IL, but went to IU, which also has its fair share of hilarious bars.

Players that sportswriters and fans like get a free pass. Unless they were mentioned in a book, that is. Then, they're fair game. Nowadays, any player that has a drop in power numbers is gonna look suspicious. That doesn't mean that they were on steroids, but that doesn't mean the steroid question shouldn't be breached. Anybody that played during that time should be looked at suspiciously. Not looking at them because you feel that it's unfair to the ballplayer to do so or reactionary or whatever is silly and part of the reason baseball got in the mess. Don't be part of the problem.
