As I said in another thread, I'd just as soon sign Preston Wilson to platoon with Jacque. He should be cheap, (iirc) he kills lefties and is a natural CF. He'd also be a nice right handed bat off the bench with power.

And Murton would keep all his AB's that way. :D

So they aren't even mentioning Church anymore? That sucks.

Brady Clark's accomplishments as a major leaguer:

.278 .358 .389

And his better years seem to be behind him, since he's trending downward. Amazingly enough, he's already 33 years old---34 in April of next year. Last year:

.263 .348 .335

He hits for pretty much no power. I've watched him field as a Brewer for a few years, he's pretty good defensively from what I witnessed.

his OBP sagged at the end of the year, but was over .380 for a while. he wouldn't cost much in terms of players, is very selective at the plate and plays adequate defense. i don't see what we're waiting for on this one.

i'll take clark leading off next season, please.

How about just keep the guy you have, Jacque, and sign Rowand to platoon? Which removes the need for Cliff Floyd and leaves Murton with 500 at bats.

Rowand isn't an FA.

Fine, trade for him then. He's on the block according to a lot of reports. Rowand's career numbers against LHers is .289/.351/.494/.845.

Its not a bad back-up idea to getting Church. I don't think it would impact the decision to get Floyd in that Rowand is a righty and Hendry feels he needs a lefty bat with power who can give the Cubs some added punch on days against those tough right-handed pitchers. Floyd would make a much better DH than either Ward or Rowand. So, if you got Rowand, Floyd would still be an almost necessary upgrade.

But acquiring Ryan Church kills all those birds with one stone.

I'd love to get Rowand, but he's going to cost you a lot in players.

Vernon Wells, Andruw Jones, Rocco Baldelli, Ryan Church to name a few CFers that are available this offseason, and the 2nd big outfield bat Hendry claimed he was going to get this offseason is Brady Clark?

Way to shoot for the moon!

Rowand and Jones would be a really good platoon. But, I think Hendry would put Rowand in CF, Jones in LF and Murton on the bench.

That .335 SLG is Pierre-like.

yeah, but he's much more patient.

I do like Brady---he's gritty and comes to play every day. His defense looked to me to be very good.

But as the SLG indicates, he's a singles hitter

It's actually even worse-Pierre's worst SLG number in the last 4 years was .354.

but so was clark's.

the year that pierre's was .354, clark's was .426, btw.

i just tend to think that clark is a more valuable player, add in cost and he's way more valuable.

i don't care about the gritty or "ready to play" truisms, i just care that clark knows how to draw walks.

i wouldn't give jacque jones for aaron rowand, talk about overrated. the guy runs into a fence to make a catch and all of the sudden he's the best thin since sliced bread.

I don't see why we don't inquire about Coco Crisp. If Manny isn't getting close to going anywhere they have JD Drew, Coco Crisp, Wily Mo Pena and Manny. I am sure we can work out something for Crisp or Pena involving relief pitching. The last time I checked they still don't have a closer and their primary target is always hurt and wants the moon, Gagne.

i don't like either really. crisp forgot how to play baseball apparently and pena, well, he's getting better.

Crisp had a broken finger last year, that's why his performance suffered.

I must've missed the part where Hendry actually said that.

There was a quote buried in the Lilly thread where Hendry told Lilly he was going after a "big LH bat". I assume this is what BigbadB is referring to.

Natural centerfielder or no, Wilson was far worse than Adam Dunn in left field last year according to Chris Dial's metric.

The Cubs should have picked up Jose Cruz Jr., who signed with the Padres for just $650,000 and has a .392 OBP in three-year splits vs. lefties.

Yeah, Cruz, Jr. is who I wanted.

I really, really hope that isn't Hendry's idea of a "big LH bat". Floyd is nothing more that a role/part-time player at this point in his career. He's good to have on the team, but he's not going to provide the impact the offense needs.

In the last few years, Hendry's inability to find cheap production has frustrated me almost as much as his inability to get the big name free agents.

Oh well.

Chris Dial must have been drunk when he posted those numbers.

Seriously. Living in St. Louis, I saw Wilson play often. There's no way in hell that he was worse than Dunn last year. No way.
