In the unlikely event the Cubs are going to keep Jacque and play him in CF, they need a legitimate defensive CF on the roster.

Why? Are you advocating regular usage of a late inning defensive replacement?

I guess that depends on your definition of "regular", but no. I'm thinking more along the lines of certain ballparks and/or certain Cub starting pitchers.

Are there any rumors of the Cubs being interested in Steve Finley for a 1 year deal?

You tell me. I haven't heard any, and I sure hope they don't.

Ken Rosenthal mentioned a little blurb in his latest column:

Now that the Cubs have lost free-agent center fielder Kenny Lofton to the Rangers, they could revisit trade talks for Nationals center fielder Ryan Church rather than pursue free agent Steve Finley. The Cubs want an inexpensive stopgap in center until top prospect Felix Pie is ready to assume the position full-time.

It's going to be interesting to see if the Rangers are going to non-tender Wilkerson tommorow. I wonder if the Cubs would look into giving him a contract. If he comes back healthy after shoulder surgery he could put us some solid numbers in CF.

If we were hoping for the future, like we take fliers on pitchers, it could be a good deal. But I can't see counting on Wilkerson for this year, as aside from Jones, there's no plan B.

Church made the most sense, even before Lofton was signed. We have the players necessary to get Church. Church is also about as inexpensive as it gets.

God I hope not. Finley's last 2 years:

2005: .222/.271/.374/.645

2006: .246/.320/.394/.714

Plus, he'll be 42 years old this coming year. We're better off just putting Pie out there.

Before 06 he put up OPS's of:

05: .756

04: .872

03: .844

02: .839

Compare that to Jones

05: .757

04: .742

03: .797

02: .852

I think if we cant get Church, Wilkerson is worth a gamble if we can also get a decent backup plan.

both Church and Wilkerson are LF's now. Neither team thinks they can really play CF. Heck, the only thing Washington has really said is that promise Church a chance to compete for the LF job.

Lofton signs 1 year deal with Texas.

How much?

$6 million

Geez. How great would it be to be a FA in this market? Doesn't matter how good you are, you're going to get paid well.
