Lieber likely will be traded:

Lieber, entering the final year of his contract, will earn $7.5 million next season, making him an attractive trade candidate. The Phillies likely will seek bullpen help in return, and the Astros are one team that could be a match.-Rosenthal

Would they take on of our arms not named Wuertz or Howry? Maybe Ohman we don't need 3 lefties. He has been OK in that bandbox in Philly. He has been durable and only walked 24 guys last year. That is amazing. We could use a guy who won't walk a lot of batters

I would love to have Lieber back, but not sure he fills our void of a #2 starter.

Something I suggested earlier that didn't get much of a response was Jones and Eyre for Lieber and Rowand. I still think it makes a lot of sense. The Phillies get the right fielder they need while opening up center. They also get one of the best lefty relievers in the game. We get a decent starter and stop gap at center.

I would think the Phils would be more willing to trade Burrell. What if Hendry packaged a deal of Jones, Eyre, Marmol for Lieber, Burrell. Cubs take all of Burrell's money.

The Phils would love to trade Burrell, but he's already said he'll only approve a trade to the Yankees, the Red Sox, or a west coast team.

That would put Soriano in CF which is where he is most valuable anyways. However, that brings us to our being to right handed again. I think Lieber could be possible, but I don't see Burrell being included in any deal.

Pitch economy and good K/BB ratio: that's been a lost art in the Cubs' rotation for the past couple of years. At 37 by the first week of next regular season, I see Liebs and Lilly being about interchangeable as the 2nd and 3rd man in the current rotation.

Ironic thing is, if the Cubs spent money back in 2002 like they have this offseason, I don't think Lieber would have left the organization.

I would take his 2000 Chicago Cubs form in terms of innings.. 251.. and 6 CG.. Especially his 2001 of 20 wins and 3.80 ERA in 230 innings.

And that is why he had the TJS.

Remember that 13 pitch CG that only lasted about 7 minutes? That man wasted no time on the mound.

And THAT is why the Cubs didn't offer him the second guaranteed year, so off to the Yanks he went.

Sad situation all around, but it made sense at the time.

I think pitching after the rain delay in 2002 played a big role in his injury.

I saw Liebs 11 rows in from the 3B line at Safeco back in 2002 - 90 odd pitches, CG, 5-1 result. The only Mariner who had any chance that afternoon was Olerud. That was one gem of a game - beautiful day, Sammy hit a 3-run blast into the opposite field stands.

Found it -- 78 pitch CG 5/24/01 vs Cincinnati, game time 1:48.

That was Ronnie woo woo day and it was longer than 1:48 b/c of rain delays, where Ronnie Woo Woo feel asleep in the rain and people were taking pictures next to him while he was sleeping.

Digger Phelps was also sitting close to me and I was able to express my dislike towards him by asking him how well he did vs. UK.
