I really hope we don't sign this guy. I don't think he is as bad as some do, but we need a no. 2, not a no. 5.

Where are you going to get a number 2? I'm not in favor of signing Marquis, but a front-line starter is pretty much out of the question.

Why not Zito?

3 loopy lefties in one rotation?

Eh, I'd be lying if I said I'm happy that we're close to acquiring Jason Marquis, but at least he's still fairly young. He won't be nearly as bad as last year. If he can put up numbers more like the rest of his career than last year I'll be... content.

yeah, if the Cubs sign Marquis for 3 or more years at more than $8M per year, mods please ban me for a month so that I can't get myself banned.

Yeah, and if Bush won the Presidency in 2000, Alec Baldwin was moving to Canada. Don't make promises you won't keep!

If you do decide to take time off, the least you could do is set up a bot to post periodically and give us Josie goodness

If I'm banned, how can I not keep my promise? :D

But I'm a man of my word. If Marquis is a Cub for that price, I'm out till January 10. Then I'll return - possibly as a Twins fan.

I hope Marquis isn't the only alternative. Because I don't think Hendry is even considering Zito at this point.

Agreed on both counts.

This is from another thread that Bruce was commenting in. Thought I'd quote it here so we could keep this topic in one thread...

Bruce, feel free to also dispel the 3 year, $27M contract offer to Marquis, so that people here don't have to consider throwing themselves from the nearest high building.

I don't know about the numbers, but I've been writing since last month that they're interested (I know there's a thread about this, so let's keep it over there. But I'll answer the question here.) I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him signed.

That's the big difference for me. If we sign him for 3/27, I think Marquis "could" live up to the contract. He has the potential to do so if he has 2 to 2 1/2 good years out of those 3. However, I don't think there is much room for him to exceed the expectations of that contract-which makes that a move with little upside and tremendous possible downside, where we are simply hoping that he is worth what he is being paid.

Now-if he is being paid 3/15 or 3/18, the risks and upside start to get better, and this becomes a much better chance of a good signing-and if you can convince him to go less than 3 years for that sort of money, it might even be a pretty decent signing from the beginning-but it won't be that if it's 3 for 27 or something similar.

The money the Cubs would throw at Zito should be reserved for Zambrano, who is going to cost a small mint to keep around.

right now, just thinking what Big Z would ask for on the open market is scaring me.

6 years and $102M is my guess.

it still depends on what Zito ends up with.

Marquis was god-awful last year, there is no getting around that. He is not worth 9 million a year.

Having said that, I think if he could put up something similar to his 2004 and 2005 numbers, he would be a decent addition to the back end of the rotation.

2004

15-7 201.1 IP 3.71 ERA

2005

13-14 207.0 IP 4.13 ERA

He falls in line with what the Cubs are looking for, durability. He has thrown at least 190 innings the last three years.

If, and only if, he can be signed to a reasonable contract, I don't think it is THAT bad of a move. I'd rather have him, with a decent contract, then 5/55 for Meche.

And that would be a bargain. Zito is likely to get that being a #2 starter. Z is a legit ace.

Aces don't hit the open market very often anymore. They don't get traded often either.

At least 6/102MM. This market is flush with cash. Zambrano would get more next season.

does anyone else think we have now pissed away a possibly stellar offseason?

really..less than a week ago we were talkning about getting schmidt-lilly and jennings....with meche thrown in as a possiblity

we were set to get another big bat...

now we get lilly but not schmidt or meche. jennings is supposedly untouchable, garcia went to the phils for prospects

we are talkning about ward as the big bat...ward who has no place to play

and we are talking about gambling on marquis to help save our staff...might as well go back to hoping wood and prior will be studs

we are better but how much? we still look to have serious holes on offense and pitching. we are aslo back to hoping for career years from derosa, marquis, jones again. lilly...etc

If Zambrano would have another great year and at his age, and him being a ace he is, he would end up with just unbelievable money.... I just hope Hendy can lock him up.

Also, he becomes a free agent after this season if he isn't resigned. Next winter, he is far and away the best free agent pitcher. The only other starter worth anything is Smoltz, who might retire. After him there is Schilling, also quite old, and then Jason Jennings. He blows them all out of the water.

Z at that point will be going into his age 27 season, his prime 4 years, having put up 200 innings and an ERA below 3.50 in 5 consecutive years. That's ridiculous value and even more ridiculous dollars.

Who's talking about Ward as "the big bat"? I doubt Hendry is done, it's only the beginning of December.
