Steve Phillips was just on ESPNews and said he thinks Lilly with sign with the Cubs. He believes the yankees are using Lilly to hurry Pettite along, and to drive up the price for the Cubs.

Did I just hear Steve Stone say the Sox might be able to trade Contreras and get back Lackey?

That deal makes very little sense.

I just logged on and heard them talking about, I believe, Contreras, and then Stone talked about them getting back a guy like Lackey (or somebody else) who could slide into their rotation.

Andy Pettitte decided Wednesday he will pitch next year rather than retire.

"Andy told me he wants to play in 2007 and perhaps beyond," said agent Randy Hendricks. Hendricks intends to negotiate with both the Astros and the Yankees. It's believed the Yankees have already offered a one-year, $15 million contract.

what good does it do for the yankees to drive up the price for the Cubs? That doesn't make sense at all.

Everyone like screwing with Hendry. It's the new game.

Yeah, I don't see it either. I think they'd do it for the Red Sox, or if the Cubs were also in competition for some other players they targeted. But it really doesn't do the Yanks any good to arbitrarily increase the cost of signing mediocre pitchers.

Either that or Steve Phillips doesn't know what he's talking about. I'll take the latter.

I'm not sure if I understand it either.

Not to mention the fact that Contreras has a no trade clause

Im getting mad at the fact that they keep raising our expectations and then a little while later they do nothing... and boom they punch us in the gut, nothing unusual because we should be used to that by now. and by the way can anyone go down to Orlando and tell me wut Jimbo is doing?

A's Sign Piazza

ORLANDO, Fla. -- - Exit Frank Thomas. Enter Mike Piazza.

The Oakland A's have agreed to a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the free agent, FOXSports.com has learned.

Piazza's agent, Dan Lozano, did not comment.

Piazza, 38, will be the A's full-time designated hitter, replacing Thomas, who signed a two-year, $19.12 million free-agent contract with the Blue Jays earlier this off-season.

That's not bad at all for Oakland. They get a guy who can clearly still hit, and backup Kendall at catcher for the 3-4 innings of the season he doesn't catch.

there was a rumor earlier todahy about some sort of crede - lackey trade and then the white sox would spin off two starting pitchers so maybe what you heard was followup onj that.

I like the sounds of that.

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, free agent Gil Meche likely will sign with the Cubs.

The rumor has been that Meche would pick Toronto, but a member of the Blue Jays said it was Toronto's understanding that Meche would be signing with the Cubs. We're not sure whether this is a sign Ted Lilly is going to end up with the Yankees. The Cubs have been hoping to sign both.

I would rather have Meche than Lilly.

Unfortunately, if the Cubs want to contend, signing Meche and Lilly is one of their few options. I'm undecided as to whether or not I'd rather they just rebuild in '07.

According to Jerry Crasnick:

Now that the Dodgers have added starters Randy Wolf and Jason Schmidt, they have enough depth in the rotation to trade a starter for a bat. Two baseball people said the Dodgers are shopping right-hander Brad Penny.

Free agent Matt Stairs is close to signing with the Jays, according to MLB.com.

It will be Stairs' first stint with the Jays. It originally looked like he'd sign with the team in 2002, but he ended up picking Pittsburgh instead. Stairs would take over as the club's fourth outfielder and get the occasional start over Reed Johnson against right-handers.

Giants signed catcher Bengie Molina, who had been with the Blue Jays, to a three-year, $16 million contract.

Well, Molina did out-OPS Eliezer Alfonso 785 to 767 last season. Surely that's worth $16 million. No, Alfonzo probably isn't that good, but neither is Molina, a career .275/.310/.407 hitter. At age 32, he entering the territory at which catchers tend to collapse offensively, and his decline on defense has been rapid and could continue. Throw in that there was no indication that Molina had even a substantial one-year offer from any other team and this is another one of the worst signings of the offseason.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the Braves are just waiting for some information on Mike Gonzalez's elbow before going through with the Gonzalez-for-Adam LaRoche trade with the Pirates.

Also, it's worth noting that the article, which was published at 5 p.m. ET, says nothing about the reported Rafael Soriano-for-Horacio Ramirez trade with the Mariners.

all from rotoworld.

Get Penny and Suppan and I'll be a happy man.

Found this sort of amusing; Rotoworld:

The Boston Herald says little has gone on with the Manny Ramirez talks on Wednesday and that Ramirez is expected to remain with the Red Sox.

Michael Silverman says the Mariners refused to part with J.J. Putz and Adam Jones and apparently made Putz untouchable in talks. So, Putz, a soon-to-be 30-year-old reliever with a career ERA of 3.47 in 205 innings, cannot be had in trade talks, but Rafael Soriano, a soon-to-be 27-year-old reliever with a 2.89 ERA in 171 innings, is up for grabs for a No. 4 starter. Genius.

No doubt, that makes no sense at all.
