hendry said today on the score that we are pursuing schmidt, lilly and jennings plus a bat. it at least sounds good! i hope we pull it off but it sounds like money will not be a problem! let's hope

Hendry said that? I thought he wouldn't be able to comment on Jennings, since he is under contract with another team. Is that tampering?

I never thought it was smart for a GM to comment on what he was doing.

Dammit, Lilly sucks

Agreed.

care to back this up?

His only two good years (02 and 04) he had BABIPs 70 points and 40 points lower than his LD% would have predicted as well as LOB% higher than league average and well above his other years.

OK, so that suggests that during the two years that he was significantly above-average (120 ERA+ each year), he was lucky. So again - where is the evidence that he sucks?

I don't necessarily think he "sucks" but is around the average to slightly below-average ranking.

We could do a lot better than Lilly (Schmidt, Jennings), but we could also do worse than Lilly (Meche).

If you combine that all with his propensity to give up the longball, pitching half his games in wrigley, and paying him 10-11M a year...he sucks.

OK, well let's say that he's not worth the money or something like that, or the deal would suck. As a major league pitcher, he doesn't suck.

And Toronto was more homer-friendly than Wrigley the past two years, by the way.

I hope you prefer Jennings over Lilly only because of their contracts. Jennings' 2006 was also somewhat fluky, and it's the only year out of the last four that he's been better than average.

He has never pitched 200 innings in his career, he is a .500 pitcher at best, he has mechanics that need to be fixed before he has a serious arm injury, his attitude toward pitching has been questioned, flyball pitcher, and he pitches high in the zone.

Sounds to me like an average pitcher.

Please, share with us who you want, then say all the good things that you possibly can about them while omitting all the negatives.

LOB% higher than league average and well above his other years.

By the way, doesn't this sort of make sense? If the guy is pitching well, that means he's getting a greater percentage of guys out. When you do that, you'll leave more people on base. Chris Carpenter's LOB% was average to below-average while he was on the Blue Jays. The last three years, it's been well above the league average, and well above his other years. Guess that's just luck too.

Still awaiting a decision from Ted Lilly, the Cubs met with Gil Meche's agents on Tuesday.

The Cubs have Lou Piniella, who used to manage the Mariners, working to recruit Meche. However, Lilly does appear to be their first choice, and they might spend big for Jason Schmidt before going to four years on Meche

The Cubs have requested medical information on free agent Cliff Floyd.

This could take a while. How many weeks do you suppose it would take to put together a complete history of Floyd's injuries anyway? And then, once it was finally compiled, it's not like you could overnight it to teams. The postage alone would cost more than Floyd's services for 2007

Depends on if hes leaving the guys on base or if a reliever is coming in. Anyone know how to decipher the Baseball Reference Game Log Situation Out?

Hendry did talk on the phone Tuesday with Alan Hendricks, who represents Schmidt, one of the top free agents still available. Schmidt has not limited his search for a new team to the West Coast. The right-hander has averaged 30 starts, 14 wins, 200 innings and 200 strikeouts over the last five seasons with the San Francisco Giants.

Schmidt also isn't insisting on a long-term deal.

"I think when a player has been successful for a long time, and they start thinking about the end of their career, they start trying to map out when they want to quit playing," said agent Randy Hendricks, who also represents Schmidt. "The next decision is less about accumulating all the money they can get and more about what seems to work best, all things considered."

Unfortunately, that just reeks of "signing on the west coast" to me.

Hendry is going to need to pull a Soriano rabbit out of his hat wrt Schmidt and simply blow him (and the market) away with an offer he can't refuse. If he isn't interested in contract length, fine--make him happy with more $$ per year. Someone mentioned 2/36 with an option, why not? I believe Soriano only gets $9MM the first year (someone correct me if wrong), and if Hendry moves Dempster and Jones, that's $10MM in Schmidt money right there per year.

Latest from the scout.com meetings updates:

ITD did a live chat this evening...Lilly to the Cubs looks like it will LIKELY happen as JP is unwilling to go 4/44 like the Cubs have. In other news, Gil Meche could be a Blue Jay as early as this evening (the deal will likely be in the neighborhood of 4 years, 36 million).

Further to that, the Cubs pursuit of Lilly was termed as "desperate", hence the reason a deal appears likely.

And also the Yankees are all but out of the Meche/Lilly "Sweepstakes".

and...

The Jays are meeting with Lilly's agent as we speak. Word is, if at the meeting Toronto agrees to go 5 years for Lilly (they aren't expected to), Lilly will sign with Toronto.

I want Lilly back, but for five years, no thank you...

I asked about Schmidt but I don't know how much info there will be since it's probably alot of Blue Jay related info being passed along.

Meche at $9 mill per, or Lilly at $11 mill per....not exactly great choices.

looks like lilly will happen (nothing new) and floyd will happen by the end of the month

Meanwhile, the Cubs continued to lead the pack in negotiations for left-hander Ted Lilly and were in the race for right-handers Jason Schmidt and Gil Meche.

Talks with Cliff Floyd's agent also heated up, and the Cubs are likely to sign the free-agent outfielder to an incentive-laden deal by the end of the month.

Use of past tense for the race for Schmidt and Meche?
