Way to go Texas, trying to bring in Zito to one of the most notorious hitters parks in the entire major leagues. That'll be a solid investment. I can see the 2008 headlines now:

John Daniels fired as Texas GM

Texas ought to just spend the money they have saved up for Zito on a construction company to move the fences out in Arlington.

Jim has said he wants some left-handed power in the outfield....

Barry, your table is set!

What CFer is avalable that is left handed and has power assuming Soriano is in RF?

Ryan Church!!!!

To a lesser extent Gabe Gross.

FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal believes the Rangers could offer Barry Zito a six-year, $102 million contract.

That's the kind of offer they'd likely need to make in order to sign him, as Zito is believed to prefer the West Coast or New York. Rosenthal believes the Rangers are aiming to both sign Zito and keep free agent Vicente Padilla.

Boldface is mine. You see, this is what I hate about the Hot Stove, a lot of these guys like Rosenthal don't make the distinction between actual scuttlebutt, and off-the-cuff guessing. I guarantee you Rosenthal has not heard that Texas is offering 6/102 to Barry Zito. Instead, he is ruminating to give himself something to write about. It's just like the pap Phil Rogers subjects us to all the time.

Here's my Winter Meetings Blog entry, Ken. The Cubs could offer Jason Schmidt 4 years, $60MM. Really, they could. The Cubs could also trade for Manny Ramirez and Miguel Tejada. Quite the scoops, huh?

to be fair, he did say "could." I completely agree that it's the key to the entire "report," but it's not Rosenthal's or the Hot Stove's fault. IMO, the better target for offseason frustration is the people who read the reports are take them as fact.

That said, IF the Texas guess is true, I'd say the Cubs are out of the Zito running -- if they were even in it.

I'm moving this from the CBS Reporting ... thread.

The Chicago Cubs are deep into discussions with several free agent pitchers, including Ted Lilly and Jason Schmidt, and are waiting for them to make some decisions. The Cubs already have spent more than $230 million this winter for Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano, Mark DeRosa, Kerry Wood, Henry Blanco and new manager Lou Piniella, and they're still expected to be major players this week. The Cubs still plan to sign two starting pitchers and an outfielder. They are in heavy on Julio Lugo, and a source within the Cubs' organization said the club hopes to leave town later this week with its holes filled.

I completely agree; to which I am mildly annoyed when some posters in this thread jump to conclusions based on those exact "guesses", and start posting lineups and rotations. While on its own it's not entirely bad (and what message boards are for), it is the emotional flipping out that gets me.

Looks like Padilla is heading off the market:

Vicente Padilla's agent, Paul Kinzer, said Monday afternoon that the right-hander is close to reaching an agreement to return to the Rangers in a multiyear deal.

"That's where he wants to be," Kinzer said, "so we're trying to get it worked out." Padilla is expected to get $10 million-$11 million per year. The question is whether he'll get a guarantee for a fourth year or just a three-year deal.

And no, this is not hypocritical to my last reply. ;)

Doesn't really bug me. Emotionally flipping out is part of being a Cubs fan. This is all part of the fun of the winter meetings. Guessing, changing lineups, rotation, dreaming. I love it!

People like talking baseball. That includes lineups and signings and projected stats. At this point in the year, it's mostly speculative, and as long as people know that, this can be a great time for "what-if" discussions.

The Cubs are making a hard push for Ted Lilly. According to Steve Phillips, Lilly's agent will arrive later today.

I bet he signs be tomorrow.

Padilla is a good deal at 4/40-44, and a great deal at 3/30-33.

This will be terrible if he ends up being our number two.... Damnit Jimbo, you should be pushing for Schmit, not Lily

Heh, if he then trades for Westbrook, we really are going to wind up with everyone we were rumored to be getting in the Sosa deal (2000). Soriano, Westbrook, Lilly...

Just need Jackson Melian. Oh, wait...

Wow, I had completely forgotten about those rumors. Ricky Ledee's name was thrown around as well - if I remember - in a deal that would have also included Ismael Valdes. Good times.
