If the Cubs can't get Schmidt, they should get pitching through trades. The thought of signing Lilly and Meche combined for $80 million over the next 4 years makes me sick. Go after Jennings, Westbrook, one of the Pirate pitchers, or sign Suppan.

Im just gunna guess he wants to stay in his home state and signs with the Mariners..If so, theres nothin else we can do about it

Or the Dodgers. I believe that if the Cubs really thought they had a shot at getting him, they would overpay him just like they'll be doing with Meche & Lilly.

I hate Lilly and Meche... why would anbody in their right mind want those bums for 10 mil and not Schmidt for 15?

If Jimbo lets the Cardinals outbid the Cubs and scoop up Schmidt, he should be fired immediately unless the Cardinals blow him away with an offer of like 18 million a year.

The first article on Cubs.com makes it sound like talks continue with both Schmidt and Meche while simultaneously getting close on Lilly. I know it's pointless to even dream about such a thing, but is this season's pocketbook deep enough to bring in all three?

I wouldn't call it a dream to bring in Meche.

Schmidt and Lilly would be cool, adding Gil to that group is overkill and not helpful.

I don't know why we'd want to.

Z

Schmidt

Hill

Prior/Miller

Lilly

That'd be a pretty full rotation.

I dunno who to believe. Levine says we are hot on the trail of both Lilly and Schmidt. Others say its Lilly and Meche. I read somewhere we wanted Padilla but he never seriously considered leaving TX. Hendry is freakin' everywhere, whereas in the past he was far less so. Its tough to know which rumors have any basis in fact.

Just give me this, Jim:

Z

Schmidt

Lilly

Jennings

Hill

Back ups: Prior and Miller

I hope this is what we get. Even if they can't trade for Jennings, just say no to Meche, Hendry.

I don't get where people are seeing any difference between Lilly and Meche...

Neither have ever gone 200 IP in a season.

Lilly gave up 4 more HRs last year in 5 less IP.

4.65 (Meche) compared to 4.60 (Lilly) career ERAs

K/9 and BB/9 were both fairly close last year, as well as H/9

Lilly had a 5.56 ERA in '05.

Neither are great pitchers...both are going to cost between 9-11 mil per year, IMO. Only difference being, one is LH and 30...the other is RH and 28.

It makes me no difference.

i put thisi a different thread but hendry was quoted on the score as saying the cubs were after schmidt, jennings and lilly plus another left handed bat .

perhaps meche is the back up plan if they can't pry jennings away. or it could be leverage to get one or both of lilly and schmidt signed. if we are offering the best deal to lilly and schmidt but they are holding out..having the rumor out there that they are looking at meche too..might lead them to believe that if meche signs the dollars from us go away...i have to believe if the numbers out there for schmidt and lilly are accurate, they are the best offers

one other thing..meche and lilly are much better than our options. prior had a 7 era...hill looks like he finally got it but guzman, marshall, mateo, miller, ryu are all worse...yes they have some uopside and may improve BUT it certainly seems like hendry feels he needs to win now and money does not seem to be an issue. so as long as signing meche and lilly and schmidt do not keep us from filling other possible needs who cares if we overpay for 3 pitchers? it's not my money and we are much closer to winning with all 3 in the lineup as oppossed to having marshall, hill, and hoping prior and miller make it back..i am tired of that.

if we sign one...we are looking at hill, marshall and prior or miller or another youngster in the rotation every 5th day. if we sign 2 of them...we still have hill and one if the other 3.

I hope you're right. I want Schmidt more than anyone out there on the market right now...Zambrano and Schmidt would give this team a legit 1/2 combo.

Yep. Here comes the Cards, waiting to see who the Cubs want so they can swoop in and steal him out from under us.

And probably and much less $$$$ too. Hendry needs to attend the Walt Joketty school on how to get players for less than their market value.

Didn't Hendry do that with Ram and DLee?

I had heard that the Yankees expressed some interest in Schmidt, but that he ruled them out. Is this true? If so, why would he want to come to the Cubs when the Yankees could very easily outbid any team?

It has been reported that Cashman had very little interest, and was afraid of getting burned by an NL pitcher again. There's some truth to the notion that NY likes guys who have proven they can do it in the AL East, and especially in NY.

XM Radio is reporting that Schmidt has his choice down to 3 teams: Mariners, Dodgers, and Cardinals.

Doesn't sound good, but hopefully Hendry's still talking to him and his agent.
