Memo to Jim Hendry--

Just hang up the damn phone when Baltimore calls. Not. Worth. The Time.

Jerks.

Unless they want Freddie Bynum

Yeah, I'm wondering if Piniella can get in Jacque's ear a little and convince him to come back too.

The situation is completely different now. Jacque is now a bargain instead of a highly-priced pickup (still amazes me how quickly that can happen), and the fans now realize his value.

Last year was Dusty's lame duck year, nothing was ever going to happen for this club, it was going to be a train wreck from the beginning regardless. I know the fans took it out on Jacque----just hoping maybe he can give us one more shot. I'd put him in CF in a heartbeat, considering the lack of options out there right now.

Really, you don't need to trade Jones in order to pick up someone like Church. Jones can be moved in Spring Training or during the season. There are plenty of PAs to be had between Murton, Jones, Soriano and Church. This reminds of the Beltran situation where everyone speculated that Hendry couldn't/wouldn't sign him until he traded Sosa (obviously this is on a far lesser scale).

If there is no deal out there that makes sense, just hold on to Jones. There is absolutely no reason to "dump" him.

What angers me most about this is the O's assumption that when we make a trade we just clear out the trash and take whatever they offer. On certain baltimore messege boards they are asking why on earth the cubs would do this. Trades shouldn't be about ripping off a team it should be about 'good baseball deals'. The Cotts-Ardsma trade is a good example as both players project similarly and will have a better chance to play at the other club. As cubs fans we are often told we overvalue our own prospects well if we do what the hell do Tamps and Baltimore do?. They always want to 'sell' trades in order to passify their fanbase, so unless they can rip a team off they don't deal truely pathetic.............

how in the hell does it happen that jacque jones has NO trade value, how? he had a good year at the plate and is somewhat of a bargain. he's only 31, why does nobody want him?

why do all of the players we would seek to trade have absolutely no trade value?

Well, for one, not everybody is enamored with one good year.

If Hendry can't move Jones for quality value, just keep him. Trade for Church, trade bullpen arms and prospects for another starter and call it an offseason. An outfield of Church, Murton, Jones, Soriano and Ward works for me.

The rumored deal for Marcus Giles to San Diego was Scott Linebrink. A combination of Eyre or Howry with Marmol or Mateo might be enough to get Hudson from Atlanta. Atlanta should be able to move Giles easier since they are discussing nontendering him if they can't work a deal. Hudson is expensive now.

poor defense, whiner, clubhouse cancer, can't turn the double play...

oh nevermind, that's why no one wanted todd walker :(

No, but apparently the Dodgers are enamored with players coming off two consecutive crappy years, considering the contract they gave Pierre. Perhaps if Jones had played worse this year would could have dealt him to LA for something good in return.

but for that one good year to actually decrease his value? that doesn't make sense.

This really can't be said enough. This is exactly what he should do if Jones' value is really that low.

When did it decrease? I don't remember it being higher. He wasn't exactly a hot commodity on the free agent market last year, why should he become a hot commodity on the trade market a year later.

Very true. A Jones/Murton LF platoon, Church/Jones/Theriot in CF, and Soriano with a spot of Jones/Ward in RF could be darn right excellent.

when did i say that he should be a "hot commodity"? it just shouldn't be this hard to get any kind of value in return for him is all i'm saying.

Right. I'm not necessarily an advocate for platooning Murton, but that could be a pretty productive OF (and provide some adequate bats off the bench). They don't have to straight platoon Murton/Jones. Jones can get time in all three OF positions.

I never said you called him a hot commodity. But you referred to his trade value decreasing. In order for it to decrease it must have been higher before, and I don't see any evidence that it was higher.

We don't know what Hendry wants. He could be asking for a heck of a lot. It might be easy to trade him for some kind of value, but Hendry might not want that kind of value.

He also might be trying to treat it like Boston treats Manny, pretending to try and trade him, but asking for a lot so they are forced to keep him.

Yeah, teams are willing to throw cash around (well, not all teams, only a handful have really done anything, and there are rumors NYY's payroll might decline), but they don't seem all that willing to give up good players for mediocre corner OFers. The free agent market going higher does not mean the trade market for Jacque Jones should be higher.

That has to be the most positive sounding post I have ever seen from you about the Cubs!

Problem is, Goony is dreaming. The Cubs won't do this. They'll likely trade Jones for little to no return and Church will probably be traded to someone else, leaving Hendry to pay 6m for Lofton.

Sorry to burst your bubble. :D

Sad but true.

I think Hendry has spoiled us this offseason with a transaction every 20 minutes. Let's remember that it's still early and holding onto Jones into the new year (or even spring training) might give other teams time to decide they need an OF. As many of you have posted, keeping Jones and picking up someone like Church to have a 4-5 OF platoon might not be a bad idea. Let's be patient and see what happens.

Ok, people, we need to start an investigation leading into gooney's whereabouts.
