One player who is set is outfielder Matt Murton. Soriano is expected to take over right field, and Murton will see plenty of playing time, Hendry said.

"I'm very happy with Murton and have no intention of trading him," Hendry said of the young outfielder, who hit .297 in his first full big-league season with 13 home runs and 62 RBIs. "I think Murton is going to be a quality player.

"I'd like to augment the outfield situation with some left-handed help, but not in any way is that a negative thought process toward Matt," Hendry added. "We're obviously a little too right-handed now. Hopefully, we can add some left-handed help, whether it be in the outfield or off the bench. There's absolutely no negatives to Murton. We all feel his better days are ahead of him, and he's got a chance to be a really, really good player. I don't plan on doing anything but giving him a chance to play a lot."

Good. He better be serious.

That Zito talk is interesting too. When the Schmidt offer rumors came up they couldn't shoot the rumor down fast enough, but he won't comment on this Zito rumored offer?

On Sunday, Hendry would not go into specifics about any possible negotiations, and would not comment on a rumored offer to free agent Barry Zito. The team was not believed to have made an offer to the left-hander.

"I'm interested in anybody who will make us better," Hendry said.

Maybe I'm reading too much into that, but it doesn't sound like they are killing that rumor the same way they did with Schmidt.

I think this means that the Cubs feel Jock cannot play CF. Why else would they be looking for left-handed help when Jock is LH?

because he can't hit lefties

Isn't it Lou's decision on whether he plays a lot or not? Since when does Jim make on-field decisions?

I see your point, but I think Lou will appreciates Murton's talents a little more than what's his name.

of course not! The man can drive runs in with his glove!

sorry to go back to back to back with my posts, but I have a solution to help the lack of lefty bats.

Todd Walker, your 2007 secondbaseman.

because he can't hit lefties

You're right, he would need a platoon partner against lefties but his numbers against righties are pretty good.

Doesn't mean Murton is untouchable. I'm sure he could be had for the right price.

Walker would be ideal for the bench and splitting time with DeRosa. He's an ideal #2 hitter or if Lofton is brought in, he's disciplined enough for the eighth spot. Unfortunately, I think that ship has sailed.

Walker didn't exactly help his marketability with his brutal performance after leaving the Cubs. He's in the same boat as someone like Aaron Boone this offseason, he'll need to accept a bench role with someone and maybe if an injury arises, he can get some regular PT again.

He was better offensively with the Padres than with the Cubs last year, so I assume you're not referring to his offense.

Huh? Walker raked after leaving the Cubs. He was much better with the Padres.

Hurrah! Hurrah! Hurrah!

I'm glad to hear it, but I was never given any reason to think that JH was going to trade him. Just because Hendry is talking about getting a left-handed bat for the OF didn't mean that Murton was on his way out. Contrary to popular belief, Hendry is aware of what statistics are and is also aware of the numbers Matt put up in the 2nd half last year.

Walker with the Padres: 282/366/419.

Not too shabby for a bench player.

I miss Todd.

And his unbeatable stubble.

I really liked Todd Walker.. He really loved being a Cub.. I wish Cubs would sign him again.

Murton is straight-out solid. Most teams would welcome him... good .obp, few strikeouts.. how the hell is he a Cub? Anyhow, great to hear from Hendry.
