unless something changed with the new CBA, I thought teams still had to go through the formalaties and offer arby to their players that sign elsewhere.

My apologies, I mis-read the point of your post earlier.

But the Cubs only potential arbitration filing was for John Mabry. As Tree said earlier in the thread, there's no paperwork to file for Pierre.

CBA says:

"A Type A, B or C Player shall be subject to compensation only if (i) he is offered salary arbitration by his former Club on or before December 7 (12/1 in the new agreement) pursuant to Section B(3) of this Article XX and signs a contract with another Club; or (ii) he signs a contract with another Club prior to December 7" (now 12/1).

A couple of shockers to me are Craig Wilson and Andy Pettite not getting offered arbitration.

Pettite's talking about retirement. Wilson hasn't been linked to anyone, so he might have just accepted.

The kicker to me is Graffanino, he had interest until the Brew-crew offered him Arb. Now, he's probably just going to accept it from them.

His BA fell in 2006, 2004 he did hit 29 HR's, but he is essentially a .260 hitter under 20HR's, he has some versatility playing RF/LF/1B and did catch occassionally until 2004.

I would take him as a 25th player on a very good team to platoon him occassionally in those corner spots and have him for emergency as a catcher.

Holy huge avatar Batman!!

Relax. Looks like he doesnt go here much. Let him re-size it before we start criticizing eveyone.. I think he should cut out Prior and then re-size it... and put it in his sig instead. It's a nice pic.

A 260 hitter with an IsoD of .100 is a pretty darn good hitter.

But where is the risk in offering either of them?

Obviously in Wilson he might have accepted it, that's the risk. Apparently the Yankees don't want him. As far as Pettite, either Houston wants to cut ties or they think they can sign him cheaper than an Arbiter would rule.

I don't think the Yanks don't want him. I believe there were earlier reports that the yanks were talking to him. They are definitely in the market for a firstbasemen. Possibly they believe that they could sign him to less than the raise he would have received in arbitration. Which means that he could probably be had for about what he made this year (3.5M).

The Astros not offering Pettitte arbitration makes perfect sense. He made 17 million last season and had they offered him arbitration, he could only have a 20% pay cut. If the Astros offered Pettite arbitration, they would have had to pay him a minimum of 13.8 million.

Also remember the new CBA eliminated the May 1 rule.

yes. this is the key because you are no longer cutting ties with a player by not offering arbitration. all you are risking is the opportunity to pick up draft picks.
