Screw relying on rookies like last year..Chumps like Guzman and Marmol had all year and tons of starts to get expirience and correct themselves..They didnt do a single thing and we ended up in the basement...Im not gunna wait for them to prove themselves..That could take til lthe year 2014..Who knows, they might be awsome down in triple A but they will be nobodys in the majors..I dont care about money, just go out and get Lilly, just to have someone with expirience and a transsition from the AL to the NL, he will be way better than both of them..Guzman and Marmol belong in the pen.nowhere else

word is that the yankees and astros are getting tired of waiting around on pettitte which is hwy the yankees got into lilly. supposedly lilly has told friends he'd like ny but ny didn't make an offer until today and supposedly they're meeting with lilly's agent right now. sullivan must have bumped his head and thought the yankees meeting meant a press conference.

"We're not moving forward with Toronto," O'Brien said. "It had nothing to do with the dollars or a lack of aggressiveness on the part of the Blue Jays. What it boiled down to was Ted decided he would like a change of scenery. He's looking forward to the challenge of trying to win a pennant and a World Series for the Cubs or the Yankees."

Anybody outbidding the Yankees should be afraid. How many SP do they need.

i dont thing the Yanks will get him. I think its either the Cubs or some other random team who wasnt ment to be in this thing from the begining.

As much as many of you dislike Lilly, I'll be incredibly disappointed (especially considering Schmidt's off the market) if we don't get him. We can't afford to have a rotation filled with rookies like last year.

I agree with you. I can't imagine another year of Z, Hill and whomever is the flavor of the week to fill out the rotation.

Exactly. Couple this with the fact that Hendry is also fighting for a job here. Yes, in a hypothetical situation that was based purely on risk/reward, going with the rookies might be the wiser choice, given the market. In Hendry's shoes though, he already tried it, and if he tries it again only to see the Cubs play less than .900 baseball in April, he could be gone by the end of the month.

why are you putting Walrond with guys like Guzman and Marmol? Walrond was an emergency starter, just like O'Malley. We didn't have another option.

Haha, I wonder who has a better chance to win a World Series? The team with a $200M payroll, 26 titles and 12 straight playoff appearances, or the team with incompetent management, 98 years since the last WS victory, and the 3rd worst record in baseball last year?

It's the team that throws in the extra million.

Well, if we go into next year without a guy who will likely make nearly all of his starts, then we'll have three guys in the rotation who get hurt every other week, and we'll probably see scrubs like Walrond making more emergency starts.

i've read that lilly has told friends he wanted to go back to the yankees so who knows if the cubs can do much besides drive up the price.

Word!

Indeed. Guzman'a 10 starts (coming off of injury at age 24) and Marmol's 13 starts (at age 23) clearly spell out how they will perform next year. Much more so then Meche's and Lilly's pathetic careers.

Ok I shouldve meant Mateo...I don't wanna have guys in the rotation with 5,6 ERA's and be down 6-0 in the 4th inning, and trying to "learn" to be in the big leagues..The time is now,we need expirience, consistency and reliability

The Yankees worry me tremendously. If they put an offer close to ours, I'd think he'll take it. I'm not nearly as optimistic about our chances of snagging Lilly as I was before I knew the Yankees were involved.

Lilly doesn't really fit the bill on the last two.

I want Lilly so long as we get someone else too, but what you're looking for isn't available on the market.

My gut tells me he's a Yankee by tomorrow morning. His agent says he meeting with the Yanks today, which tells me Lilly is saying you have one more shot to sign me or else I'm a Cub.

I know.we gotta make a trade too..Who knows though, Lilly could come from over there to the NL and be good..He won 15 games on a team with no sticks..He could come to Wrigley and win 17 games..well just have to wait and see how it plays out

Those guys weren't ready for the show. No one claimed they were. They're not "chumps." They're still developing.

Marmol is going to be a stud.

To me, it would be no great loss. Guzman is likely to put up similar numbers to what Lilly would anyway. Lilly is about to get #2 money to post #4 or #5 numbers. Id rather we didnt waste the money.

I liked Marmol when we first saw him and the next couple times throwing 95-98 MPH and attacking the strike zone..Then when he started for us, he went down to the low 90's and had big time walking and control issues and looked way to uncomfortable to be out there more than 3 innings..keep him in the pen

That's if Guzman can stay healthy, and that is a huge IF. I'd rather use Guzman as a long\swing man. Build up his arm strenth another year. I can't see him pitching 180-200 innings.

Will Carroll speculating the Cubs have some prospects and ability to make a deal with a with a team for pitching "just south of them."
