Also, I would much rather overspend on Penny than anyone else, Lilly included.

I just don't know if we match up with the Dodgers very well. I'd love to see Hendry try though.

Let's face the facts, having a healthy Prior changes the entire scope of the rotation. That being said I doubt Prior will ever give us a year similar to 2003 if ever.

Prior will bounce back in 07.

will bounce back onto the DL...

If he ever gets out of the DL first.

you my friend make an EXCELLENT point....good form, sir...good form

What do you think will happen if we don't get Meche or Lilly?

hendry gets desperate and trades too much for Westbrook, Jennings, or Penny.

i'd rather have either of those three over meche/lilly

Depends on what we give up. I'd rather give up money for Lilly than players for Westbrook or Jennings. I like Penny a lot, but I think he is going to demand too much in return. We don't really match up with the Dodgers either. They don't need OF help, which is what we can provide with Jones.

the money hendry is about to spend on lilly is just as pricey as a prospect/whatever package for penny when talent is taken account of.

I don't think either Westbrook or Jennings -- especially Jennings -- is much more talented than Lilly. I don't have an issue with spending money at this point. It's not like signing Lilly blocks us this year. It doesn't really hurt us down the road so long as we still have money.

lilly is a glorified estes, they compare pretty fairly with age in consideration.

Agent Larry O'Brien said Wednesday that the Blue Jays are out of the running for free agent Ted Lilly.

"It's down to the Cubs and the Yankees," O'Brien said. It's unclear whether the Yankees have made an offer. That could come with the two sides due to meet later the afternoon. The Cubs have offered $40 million-$44 million for four years.

If the Cubs signed Schmidt and Prior came back healthy, they could win 100 with the current offense, IMO. I think the Cubs will be either good or great in 2007, with Prior being the deciding factor between the two.

Well, I guess the Cubs will be good in 2007.

2007 Cubs: great team or greatest team of all time?

Stephen Colbert would not overpay for mediocrity...and you know he would have brought in Church and JD Drew and traded for Curt Schilling.

Am I the only one who is totally opposed to the idea of having Penny here? He starting out really good last year but was mediocre at best down the stretch. I've seen him pitch and to be honest I'm not impressed.

groundball pitcher in wrigley. plus i think he only has two years left on his contract, which is TONS better than four of lilly/meche

I don't think so at all, at least not stats-wise. The only years Estes had that compared to Lilly's 04 or 06 were Estes's first couple years in the league. When we signed him, he was a crappy pitcher. Lilly is at least mediocre.

No, they don't. when Estes was 30, his ERA had already ballooned to 5.73 - that was the year he was with Chicago, and his age 29 year was 5.10.

Lilly is a far better player. Estes has only the NL West to thank for having career numbers that sniff the back-end of Lilly's AL East numbers.

Penny is probably a little better than both Lilly and Meche, and considerably less expensive. I'm certainly not dying for him to be on the team, but he's certainly worth a look in this market.

Depends on whether or not they are fans of Tek Jansen. Regardless, Colbert would go with his gut after determining how "skillsy" each player is. If they ever faltered, then it's obviously attributable to the liberal bias in the media ruining the players' "skillsiness."

sullivan said a little while ago on the score that there was supposed to be a press conference announcing the decision starting right about now, but the score update just says the decision will be in the next 24 hours

Who is this O'Brien character? He seems a little loose-lipped even for an agent. Coming right out in your face and just putting the offered numbers out there seems a bit forward to me. I don't think I've ever heard, for example, Scott Boras do that.

Anyway, I'm starting to think like vance. How much are these big bucks mediocre pitchers really going to help? Compare the risk of Gooz and Marshall not improving to Ted Lilly being as bad or worse than he was last year. Are we so sure Lilly is so much more likely to come through that he's worth $11 million?

I know I'm not.

Who knows? Maybe Marmol will gain control of his stuff. If he ever did, he'd make Ted Lilly look like a dead-end prospect.

It looks like espn.com is saying 40-44, the agent didn't appear to mention the numbers, at least in the quote.

If the Yanks sign Pettitte I wonder if that will lessen their appetite for Lilly.

If it's truly down to us & the Yanks (which I find hard to believe---there's always someone else lurking), I'd like to see the price drop a bit.

Seattle could be that team that jumps in and takes Lilly.

I actually don't even think the Yankees are in the Lilly talks. I haven't heard squat in NY about them being interested. Pettite and Clemens have been the names I've read and heard discussed.
