ESPN seems to think we're closing to acquiring Lilly. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2685697

I'm a big fan.

Also on rotoworld now:

ESPN's Jayson Stark says free agent Ted Lilly is rumored to be signing with the Cubs.

It's believed the Cubs' offer resembles the four-year, $37.5 million pact that Jarrod Washburn signed with the Mariners alst season. The Blue Jays are also bidding for Lilly, and the Yankees, Orioles, Rangers and Giants are believed to have some level of interest.

Lilly's WHIP bugs me.

He walks a ton of guys. That amazes me as he throws a ton of first-pitch fastballs. You'd think he'd be able to get ahead in the count and that would trim his walks down.

It's so unlike Hendry to go after a pitcher that walks a lot of guys.

Trivia question:

When was the last time the Cubs had two lefties in their starting rotation (Hill and Lilly)? If Marshall beats out Miller for the 5 spot, they could have three. Have the Cubs ever tried that before? Does it matter in the NL?

Marshall and Rusch to start the year last year for one.

Yeah, that really confuses me too. Hendry and Piniella both griped about the pitchers giving up too many walks this last season.

At least Lilly will strike out his share of guys and get him out of jams he creates. I guess that's something.

And yet we haven't made an offer to Schmidt, but Hendry couldn't sign Lilly fast enough.

*sigh*

Starting to look like somewhere in the bowels of a backroom in Orlando, Hendry got the final word that Schmidt either wasn't interested in Chicago, or only would be if the money was incredibly high, or wanted 5 years, or whatever.

I agree, *sigh*

I'm starting to believe this as well. If Seattle is willing to go 4/56 or something like that, it may mean Hendry would have to do better than 4/60 to get him to come to Chicago. My feeling is Hendry doesn't believe he can land Schmidt, so he decided not to try. Or Hendry is doing his best to keep his interest in Schmidt hidden and will come out and get him under the radar. I hope it is the latter, but greatly fear it is the former.

Don't worry, Larry Rothschild will straighten him out.

Maybe Jim has completely lost his mind and he's going to reveal his "Big Z and the four lefties" idea. Sign Zito and Lilly. Start Hill and Marshall. When questioned Jim responds, "well, it's obvious that these are quality arms, and we felt that you just simply could never have enough lefties."

Let's assume Schmidt is not do-able for whatever reason. My question is, why haven't we heard more stories or rumors linking the Cubs and Vicente Padilla in the last 72 hours? He's certainly better than Lilly, correct? And what's the difference between paying 4 years and $38M for Lilly and 4 years and $44M for Padilla? Hendry must be infatuated with this lefty thing - only explanation I can think of unless Padilla is asking for more than $11M per year or is asking for 5 or 6 year contract duration.

Barring those, I see no good reason to sign Lilly without taking a shot at signing Padilla. JMO.

Please explain how Padilla is "certainly" better than Lilly

I think it's because Padilla's agent is currently trying to get an extension done with the Rangers. If that doesn't happen over the next day or two my guess is that those rumors are going to pick up.

Much about Padilla seems to center on his staying with the Rangers. He wants four years and the Rangers are offering three. If a compromise isn't reached there in the next few days, then I think Padilla's name will be mentioned a lot more.

He said, "explain," not "post links." If you have an opinion, bring it here.

And if he has a problem with me posting links providing the obvious explanation, allow him to defend himself. Otherwise, mind your own business.

Well maybe I would like to hear your explanation. Here's a thought: maybe other posters thought the same thing! Until you know what I'm thinking, STFU, and http://community.allhiphop.com/images/smilies/aktion034.gif

That is most certainly out of line.

Can't speak for anyone else, but what I thought was you jumped down Pedro's throat for no apparent reason.
