I can't confirm anything but this guy I used to be in a bunch of fantasy leagues with was a pretty close friend with Floyd and told me that he really wanted to come finish his career in Chicago. He said he was frustrated with all the injuries he was dealing with and was contemplating retirement.

The guy showed me tons of pictures he had with his wife and Cliff Floyd and I believe Floyd has made it obvious in the past that he wouldn't mind coming and playing for the Cubs.

9 mil for Floyd??? Yuck!

If Floyd "truly" wants to play for the Cubs, then it shouldn't take "$9 mill" to get a deal done, especially with his injry concerns.

Once and for all, the rumor didn't state that it would take 9 million guaranteed to sign Cliff Floyd.

Go back and read the original post if you have to. It talked about incentives that could reach 9 million. There was no mention of what the base might be and no mention as to what the milestones would be that Floyd would have to reach in order for the incentive money to kick in.

Okay, I'm just saying in no way do I want to potentially pay Floyd 9 mil. You don't know what those incentives are either. Maybe it's a 5 or 6 mil contract, in which case I still believe it's too much. I'm fine with Murton and Soriano at the corner outfield spots. I'm pretty sure he could get at least 7 or so from some team. GMJr and Pierre got a lot, and they are both pretty bad to mediocre players.

Nonetheless, that is way too much IN INCENTIVES to a guy who might play in 100 games.

As long as the incentives are based on 55 home runs and a 1200 OPS, I'm OK with $9 million.

haha exactly...and I've never seen a contract with incentives like that. I'd guess it would be at least a 5 or 6 million base. I'm not really in favor of paying bench players that much money. Anything above 3 and I wouldn't bother.

I don't think anybody "wants" to pay Floyd that much money, but with Pierre and Matthews both signing for as much as they did, isn't Floyd "worth" (in quotation marks due to the crazy market this off season) 9 million if he stayed healthy all season and started 150 games? Remember, the base would be lower, only the rumored maximum after all incentives were reached would be 9 million.

Let me start this off by saying that I like Floyd statistically, and I fell he could be a very solid signing for Hendry. That said, Floyd has played 150 games in 2 season. He's been in 140 two other seasons. Counting on Floyd to put up numers is like counting on Wood or Prior. If his contract is at lest 50% incentives, the signing is decent.

I'm just wondering why we're even considering a platoon with Murton. It doesn't make sense. It's like the Chewbacca defense. IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE.

Floyd would be a nice spot starter, maybe a decent RF if Soriano wouldn't mind playing center (so we can trade Jones).

I think this is why I'm uncomfortable with siging Floyd. Murton doesn't need a platoon partner. Jones needs a right handed platoon partner. That's what our target should be. If we trade Jones for a right handed hitter with severe splits, Jones would be a good signing.

I think Jason Michaels would make a good platoon partner with Jones. With Michaels' career line of .303/.387/.464/.852 vs lefties and Jones' career line of .295/.343/.493/.837 vs righties it would give you an average of .299/.365/.479/.844.

That's pretty good production from CF assuming that's where they would be sharing playing time.

9 years too late. I went to UofO for a year in 1997-98.

The Cubs are not closing in on anything with Floyd. That doesn't mean they won't sign him. They might, but it won't be right away. As of Tuesday, they hadn't even requested his medical reports.

Thanks.

Seems like the past couple offseasons there have been rumors about Floyd and Chicago.

Thanks Bruce, good to hear. The guy just had a bone spur that shreaded one of his achilies and has a bad history with his other. I know he said he feels great and is a fast healer, but the approach the cubs are taking with Prior and Wood (we aren't counting on them but if they are healthy, bonus) would be the same approach I would take with Floyd. Don't get me wrong, I like the guy, hes always had good IsoD and IsoP, but I'd sure do my due diligence before giving him any money.

Sure. Sign him to a 1 or 2 million base salary with incentives for PA's and I'm fine with it.

You've never seen a contract like that because they are not allowed by the CBA. Incentives can only be based upon appearances (ie games played, games finished (not saves), IP, PA, etc), or awards/recognition (ie ASG selection, Cy Young placing, MVP voting, etc).

Bruce, are you going to the winter meetings? It should be crazy this year with trades.

I think they are looking at platooning the wrong guy. sign Craig Wilson and platoon him with Jones, put Soriano in center.

Murton vs right handed pitcher

06 - 295/356/426

Career - 289/351/436

Jones vs left handed pitcher

06 - 234/261/416

Career - 228/275/350

Not to mention that its easier (cheaper) to find a lefty masher than a righty masher.

Yes, I leave a week from Sunday for the winter meetings. Should be fun.
