Well he put up those numbers last year so obviously he HAS to put up those numbers or worse this year because that's what all baseball players do. They can not improve their stats from year to year, only regression. It's a rule. /sarcasm

40 year old pitchers don't tend to improve. They tend to regress.

I'd take him for one year only. No incentive-based option years. Just one year period.

If he'd take a $4-5 million deal, I'd say yes. Anything more in years or money and I'll pass.

Why don't we try to get Maddux and Glavine in a package deal. Both two year deals. Maddux 2/15 and Glavine 2/18.

Of course, there is no chance that would ever happen. I'd just rather pay a Maddux or Glavine that kind of money than 4/36 for guys like Suppan, Padilla and Lily.

There are certain players (ehemrocketehem) who have certain techniques (ehemjuiceehem) to keep going after 40.

Anyway, in all seriousness we need to do *something* pitching-wise, and probably sooner rather than later. The field is looking pretty thin, we have 2 maybe 3 slots to fill.

I'd take a guy like Westbrook. Even someone like Padilla. We need inning-eaters. Gooz & Marmol would likely land our relievers on the operating table by August. Solid journeymen SP's aren't ideal, but they might be all we can realistically hope for.

And lifelong crappy pitchers like Lilly/Suppan tend to stay crappy.

I love how people just throw around the name Westbrook like they know firsthand that he can be had because they read it on teh intratubes.

I would give Padilla 4/36. folks are just going to have to come to terms with the fact that league average starting pitchers get paid $9M/year. Padilla is as much of a lock to be league average as anyone, and at 28 has a chance to be a pretty good number two type pitcher.

I starting to buy into getting Padilla.

I would be happy with either Meche or Padilla.

I'd prefer Lilly over Meche, and I want no part of Lilly. Meche almost reached league average for the first time in four years in 2006. almost. he doesn't come close to striking out as many guys as he needs to offset the number of walks he gives up and tends to give up too many home runs for the caverous home park he played in.

2 years is 1(maybe 2) years too many for Maddux, as much as i love the guy, he's just too old to be counted on(shoot he's 4 years older than me and im a decrepid old man).

i'd prefer Padilla over Meche based on the limited stats ive looked at, better K/BB, better WHIP, signifigantly less HR's...also, i've always thought moderatly highly of Padilla's stuff(having first noticed him in 2001), but never particularly even noticed Meche's (although that could easily be attributed to the fact that he's always been in the AL.)

Also i wonder what happened to Meche's 2001 and 2002 seasons and why he has never put up 200 innings in a season, is he damaged goods and if so, how damaged?

I'd take Maddux back for $5 mil. But as has probably already been said. He'd go back to LA if anywhere. It all depends on how much Maddux wants to win a world series with the chicago cubs. We're in better shape to give him that at this point with a renewed offense.
