Would this hurt his development by hitting in front of the pitcher and being rushed or could this be the start of a beautiful friendship? Of course by signing Lugo I mean for SS.

That's what I would want. I don't think we're going to be able to upgrade SS and CF if we sign Schmidt -- which appears to be the plan -- and I would much rather Pie than Izturis.

This is a great idea and i absolutely love this lineup

Soriano

Lugo

D-Lee

Aram

Barrett

Murton

Derosa

Pie

Obviously the huge ?? is left handed hitting. That lineup could really struggle against tough righties but what a dynamic exciting group that would be. Pie would have zero pressure on him and could concentrate on learning his position.

Some people think I'm crazy for saying the Cubs need a "lefty" in the lineup. That truly do. I would seriously consider Barrett to Arizona for Estrada/prospect. And put Jones in CF. Mine is in bold. If and when Pie is ready (he needs atleast a 1/2 half to a FULL season in AAA, before he is ready) Jones won't be blocking Pie.

Why does he need another half season at AAA? If he comes out and dominates in ST, I'd say he's ready. He was very good in AAA in the second half last year. I'd still say sign Lugo and have Pagan or something play CF until you feel Pie is ready if he sucks in spring training.

Don't know if this has been posted.....

Lugo Next?

Rosenthal still believes we're targeting Lugo.

Sorry if link doesn't work i'm not very techwise!!

Are these the same Cubs?? $15MM for Schmidt, another $6-9MM for Lugo.

Short of Pie suddenly becoming the next Pujols offensively, I see little problem with batting him low in the order. Not that I think he'll stink...I'm just of the mindset that it's better to bat the rookies lower where there's less pressure so they can hopefully adjust better to hitting in the bigs. Find their role elsewhere in the lineup after they've made that first step.

If this were the plan, I'd prefer to hang onto Jacque into spring training just in case Pie turns out to really not be ready. We'd have to keep an insurance policy. Or else you'll wind up losing production versus Jacque and Arthritic Piece Of Crap, which is hard to believe!

I would actually prefer to bat Pie 7th if it somehow came to this. You need someone who can take a walk batting 8th. A lot of times, pitchers try to "nibble" and get the 8th place hitter out on bad pitches. Not really a great spot to put a free swinging rookie. I would still prefer keeping Jacque in there. I really don't know why everyone is in such a hurry to get rid of him. Throw him in there after Ramirez and before Barrett and your offense is better than if Pie is playing, IMO.

I'd flip Murton and DeRosa in that lineup.

I'd rather trade for Brian Giles, put Soriano in CF where he has maximum value, and use Pie to help bring Miguel Tejada to Chicago. :-)

1. Jones + Scott Moore + Angel Guzman for Giles.

2. Prior + Pie + Roberto Novoa for Tejada.

Then sign Schmidt, do the rumored Eyre + Marshall for Westbrook trade, and call it an offseason. Man, our team would be loaded.

I think you are overpaying for Giles and not paying nearly enough for Tejada. Also, of course our payroll would probably not be able to handle such moves.

Haven't you heard? The Cubs are the New Yankees on the Block!

If we sign Lugo and do not bring in a CF, I'd just assume go with Jacque there. As maligned as he is, he'll likely outproduce Pie in 2007.

But you could trade Jones/Izturis and others for some decent starter. I agree your lineup is solid though.

Although I wouldn't be heartbroken if we did the Izturis+pieces for Crisp.

Why do so many want Crisp? He's garbage.

If the Cubs traded Izturis and Jones to Boston, and signed Lugo for SS, I would be perfectly fine with Pie hitting toward the bottom of the order. But as somebody else said, I think 7th, with DeRosa 8th, might be a little better. Edited by goony's evil twin

When he's playing with an injured hand he is, look at '04 and '05.

Holy crap. How did I overlook that? I saw his season stats and his career stats and figured it was just a typical season.

Should've known better.

EDIT -

BTW, has anyone noticed what a monster year Lugo was having last year before the trade to LA? His SLG was practically .500..

Wonder why he dropped off so hard. Could be a lot of things, I guess. Pressure, bad luck, new league, Dodger Stadium...

Even in those years, his OPS was largely dependant on BA. We don't have a huge minor league resume to go off of, but he was able to sustain it there. He does have youth on his side, just entering his prime. It would be buying low and if we are only talking about Izturis and not much else of value, it would be a solid pick up. How long is he arby eligible for?

In both '04 and '05 he had a BABIP in the .320's. That's somewhat higher than his 19 LD% would predict, but with his speed it's not surprising for him to outperform his expected BABIP.

Crisp signed an extension in April that takes him to free agency with a team option for what would be his first FA year.

2007: 3.5

2008: 4.75

2009: 5.75

2010: 8 (Team option w/ 500k buyout)

I think Pie needs at least one more year to learn plate discipline. The guy is no different K/BB wise than Corey Patterson. Sure he is eager for the call-up, but he needs to learn how to hit with plate discipline.

Jacque Jones is going to be a lot more valuable than Pie in CF in 2007.
