Is it feasible to fit Soriano, and Drew under the payroll? I think if Hendry is creative enough, he can get rid of some weight like Jones, Eyre, Izturis, etc...

and make room for those two. Then get someone like Westbrook through trade and fill in some bench spots, then call it an offseason.

I think that's pretty darn shaky, but it might be as good as we can do because this market is starting to look downright scary and the pitching available outside of Zito just isn't looking all that great (I'm assuming Schmidt has ruled out the Cubs due to geography).

At some point, I wonder if Jim & Lou will simply have to accept this is going to be a 2 year plan.

Just heard on local Fox news not too long ago that the Cubs have offered Soriano 5 or 6 years at 14 million per. I dont think that gets him in this market.

good. i would much rather have 4 years of drew than 5-6 of soriano.

I dont see why everyone thinks we can only have one or the other. With a $115 Million payroll, there is no reason we cant have both.

We can, but that would leave us only about 5 million for pitching to try to fill 2 spots.

If we got both Soriano and Drew, and added them into the lineup with guys like Ramirez and Lee, we could live with having a rotation of Z, Prior, Miller, Marshall, Marmol/whatever other minor leaguer you want.

No, no we couldn't.

And Gil Meche is $8 mil better than Marshall, Marmol, Guzman, Gallagher, etc... since when?

I'd rather go for broke on the offense if that's where the real difference makers in FA are than spend on marginal pitching "upgrades" just because our pitching is bad.

A huge key would be trading for Aaron Heilman without giving up Matt Murton.

With Heilman in the rotation for dirt cheap, you could fit both.

Of course, Hendry will get neither.

I disagree. I think we could.

Dont say that too loud.

Seriously though, it was a lapse of the mind. Edit my comment to read:

We could get by having a rotation of Z, Prior, Hill, Miller, Marshall/Marmol.

If the metrics are to be believed, batting order won't have much of an effect on the number of runs we score anyway.

The Book disagrees

The Book on The Book? I don't remember that part...

You could fit Drew and Soriano both under $120 with Heilman and Westbrook being your pitching additions, as long as you were able to move Jacque.

I don't know why I keep forgetting about Tangotiger...

I'm trying not to think about that...

Unfortunately, Hendry has to. This team will have touble competing if the rotation is Z/Hill/Prior/Miller/Marshall (or whomever). If everyone is healthy, then that could be a good rotation.

However, three of those five guys missed noteworthy time due to injury last season. That's a bit problematic.

I don't think so, simply because I don't think Hendry has two years. He needs to turn it around in one year if he wants to save his job.
