For the first time on Wednesday, the general managers gathered here for their annual meetings asked the Major League Baseball committee that oversees umpires to explore the use of the technology as an aid to arbiters in the sport.

No thanks. This would ruin my Lou Piniella experience.

I think it's about time, and really just a matter of figuring out how to make sure there's not 3 instant replays every inning.

what would be reviewable? I could live with fair or foul and homeruns (though getting rid of all parks with stupid yellow lines would be better). Definitely not balls and strikes and I would be against safe and out calls as well. I suppose you could do catch/no catch also.

No way, no thanks, never.

Umpires are 99.9% right and most of them are fantastic at what they do. (Angel Hernandez and Laz Diaz are of another world, however). baseball simply doesn't need replay.

Take the human element out of officiating as much as possible. I want replay for safe/out calls, catch/no catch, and fair/foul. Seriously, screw tradition. Having the right outcome is far more important.

And if they can make an electronic strike zone, I'd be for that too. You can keep the umpire out there to "announce" the balls and strikes, but the machine would make the decisions.

The right outcome is more important here.

How many times have we gotten screwed by bad umping? Are you saying that should just continue?

I really don't see what the problem is with getting the right call. Why not let the better team win that day, instead of maybe losing because of a blown call?

I say give each team 2 challenges per game, and the reviews will only last 90 seconds. That could get the right outcome as well as not lengthen the game by any significant amount of time.

we've been screwed about as many times as we've benifited

i dont see any reason to prolong a baseball game any further

i could see sensors along the foul line to instantly let us know fair or foul, long strike or HR, outside that you're making an extremely long sporting event even longer

don't take the human element out of the game. i'm against it. the occasional bad call is part of the game.

The human element is the players playing the game.

I can't see why people would celebrate the failure of arrogant umps as "part of the game".

My thoughts exactly.

I hate the machines calling balls and strikes idea. That is part of the player element with catchers trying to frame the ball and sometimes pitchers throwing such nasty pitches that the umpire thought it was a strike. I would hate for those things to be taken out for some stupid computer.

Things like foul/fair I wouldnt mind as long as it didnt make the game much longer.
