Didn't see this posted anywhere else. Heard on ESPN 1000 Chicago Sportscenter update this morning that Gil Meche (Career Stats) is next on Hendry's list and could be in the fold soon.

Someone please help me understand why we are targeting this guy.

Someone please help me understand why we are targeting this guy.

because the Cubs like pitchers who give up a ton of walks and homers?

Does that question really need to be asked over things like this?

my goodness, hendry is literally going to pay blanco, derosa and meche money that could have more than paid drew's salary for 2007.

and you could get slightly less production from soto, theriot and marshall for under 1 mil.

If it's any consolation, at age 26, Meche was most similarly compared to Jason Schmidt.

He was 3rd in the AL in 2006 in walks issued. Not exactly something I'm real thrilled about. But, I think he still has room to improve. Can he do that under Rothschild?

Last season was the first in which he ate up a good number of innings, which is really what I'm hoping for out of one new starter for this team. If you assume his ERA drops a little for being in the NL (based on his career and last few seasons would put it in the neighborhood of 4.7) and if he can get close to 200 innings this year, and if Hendry is going this route because he'll be dropping big bucks on offensive players who are actually worth it, I wouldn't object terribly.

So I guess that means this that, all told, this will turn out to be another in a series of mediocre moves which attempt to build a .500 team.

I guess Hendry and Co. don't have mucy faith that Marshall, Guzman, or Marmol will step up and become reliable starters in 2007.

I assumed all along that Hendry was going to go after a mediocre innings eater type who he could rely on for several decent starts.

Instead, he's sticking to his tried and true love for the unreliable guy who walks everybody. There's no way to get around it, Meche has been a bad pitcher in his career. The only times he wasn't below average was when he through partial seasons as a rookie and 2nd year player.

With his "tools" and switching leagues, I don't think a career year is out of the question next year.

However, if we're trying to re-create the Reds success with Arroyo this season, we'd be much better off with Ted Lilly.

So, yeah, once again, bad Hendry. [-X

Since 83 games won the NL Central in 2006, would a .500 team be so bad?

I agree. Meche is a decent candidate to be one of the breakout pitchers with his stuff and coming to the NL, but there are also probably better candidates out there. It really depends on the cost-are we talking 5 million, or 9.5 million? One makes it a decent to good move, and the other one makes it a bad to horrible move in my book.

Yet another reason why forgetting about 2007 looks good to me. I'd give our stable of AAA SPs all of 2007 to see if some of them can lay claim to a rotation spot in 2008. Better that than paying for Meche.

Someone give a quick scouting report on his stuff. Is he a fireballer, with control issues?

The contract will be the biggie for me. 3/15? Ok, not so bad, so long as he has a fair to middling season he'll be tradeable at 2/10. But something stupid like 3/25? Hell no.

However, if we're just looking for a 5th starter innings eater who can (probably) keep his ERA south of 5, why not just tell Dempster to start?

It's not like he's going from Toronto to Florida. The NL central isn't much of an offensive downgrade from the AL west. He's not going from facing the Yankees and Red Sox a couple times a month to facing the Cubs. His ERA+ was just 97 last year, Maddux had a 99 for the Cubs last year. That's not very helpful.

if he signs this soon after filing for FA, you can bet it ain't for 5 mil.

guys only sign with new teams this quickly if they know there's nothing better out there or they're afraid the team offering the contract is going to come to their senses soon and withdraw their offer.
