I'd like to see us bring home Hudson from the meetings. Today if possible. If we can sell it to Atlanta as a major move to free up enough payroll to bring in both Glavine and Maddux next year, they might bite. Sean Marshall and change? Didn't Marshall and Maddux strike up a bit of a rapport this year, or am I thinking of someone else?

I'd also find out what the price is for Manny.

Doesn't Hudson's ERA from last year scare you though? 4.86

Can anyone explain the difference between the November "GM Meetings" and the December "Winter Meetings"?

As best I can tell, for practical purposes the GM Meetings are where trades get proposed/discussed, and the Winter Meetings are where trades get finalized.

I'm expecting lots of juicy rumors to come out this week, but little to no actual hot stove action.

I'll be curious to see if the names of Vernon Wells and Miguel Tejada come up in any discussions this week.
Gah Hoops, your are such a tease- so, um, if you ah, you know, heard anything, you ah, would ..like um, tell us right?....

I guess I'll have to listen to the Kennedy and Dibble exposition of idiocy on XM 175 today so I can wait for updates from the meetings.

I kind of suprised myself the other day and was able to listen to "The Show" for more than an hour. I usually find it unlistenable after about 5 minutes. On a related note the boys on "Baseball this Morning" today were saying that the Marlins are definitely going to trade Willis and hang on to Cabrerra.

It does, but by the same token I also have at least mild hope that he'll have another year or two at his previous level. And if, say, it only took prospects we aren't sure will pan out anyway, I'm all for it.

At worst, Tim Hudson will be an adequate fifth starter innings eater next season. And if we get to a point in our rotation where Mark Prior bumps Tim Hudson to the bullpen, I'm liking our chances.

Of course, the more I think about it the more I'd like Atlanta to eat money if we took the contract. Because I suppose any of the "b-tier" starters like Padilla, Batista, Lilly, etc., would be about as likely to put up a good year as Hudson. So he'd have to make sense financially.

I still wonder if the Cubs might use Barrett to try to get Wells.

Why would the Cubs want to leave themselves with a GAPING hole at catcher?

That would be a bad move. There's not a catcher on the market who could replace Barrett's production while there are CF who are as good if not better than Wells.

Sign JD Drew and you can have both Barrett and a good CF.

Jeff,

Funny you mention that. I've got a source on the East coast, who has told me twice (a month ago and during the Bears game yesterday) that he expects Hendry will "shop" Barrett to see what he can get for him. He did say he had heard that the Jays, Yanks and Rockies had all expressed interest in Barrett at the trading deadline. Barrett comes into his walk year in '07, and it seems Hendry is a bit nervous about offering him a contract extension due to some negative feedback from Cub pitchers on his defensive limitations. Rather than let him walk for nothing, he would like to get something. The source said he had heard from a Yankee contact that Hendry is intrigued with LoDuca, Pudge, Kendall and Posada, who will all be free agents at the end of 2007, and who he thinks would be good defensive catchers for the Cubs rotation starting in 2008 for a couple of seasons, who can also swing the bat. If they traded Barrett, the source said that the Cubs might look to sign a guy like Mike Lieberthal on a one-year deal to bridge the gap.

Add that to the rumor mill!

Yeah, I think that would be a positive move.

Then pray for JD's health..........at least weekly :)

The Yanks, huh? Intersting. Prior, Marshall, Barrett, Eyre and maybe Moore for ARod? That could open up some doors. Just a thought.

any trade for wells is going to include a shortstop my guess would be izturis. As bad as the jays middle infield was last year there is no way they go with out a proven ss this year. They'd probably want another pitcher to replace ted lilly too

My guess is that it would take marshall, Izturis, and someone like barret to pry Wells away. Maybe thats too much and they'd send another prospect back.

I am in no way enamored with barrets defense since that game in philadelphia. You know the rundown play where he didn't run the guy half way back to third before throwing. Instead he just threw straight to third and the guy scored. I believe that was 04 down the stretch. Anyways thats bush league and that is one of the first things that every catcher and middle infielder for that matter is taught. Plus his game calling skills are mediocre at best. I agree it would be touch to replace his offense from that position.

I like that thinking. I wouldn't be averse to trading Barrett at all especially if you can get above market value for him. If they filled some other positions with better offensive options, I think you could get by with even Blanco as your starting catcher, but you would have to be pretty solid up and down the lineup to do that.

naples is a cool city. I used to go there alot when I was younger. It's almost always 80 and sunny even in january. There is an island called marco island that is right there too its really laid back but it has some of the best restaurants that I have ever been to.

I'm not opposed to trading Barrett provided you're going to improve your offense enough. He's at the point that catchers begin to wear down, and he can't really play anywhere else.

Blanco in the starting lineup. Ick. Remember we already have a Blanco at SS (Izturis/Cedeno). That's 2 pretty unproductive swingers in a lineup, 3 when you count the majority of the pitchers. I'm not sure that unless our 1-6 was Soriano-Barrett-Aramis-Bonds-D. Lee-Jones/Platoon we could survive that. And even then, it would be a huge detriment to have both those holes in the lineup.

Two more I left out. Tejada would be a big addition and Hendry's been high on him before, if I remember right.

 Don't do Bare Bare like that.

I think it would be madness to create another hole by trading Barrett. I would rather trade Pie or Veal if it was going to land me bonifide major league talent. Would Florida do Pie,Veal and Murton for Cabrera??
