This is a little off topic, but what result would be acceptable at the end of the '07 season?

For me, assuming the team stays moderately healthy and doesn't lose any of their best players for vast majorities of the season, Hendry needs to get the Cubs into the playoffs to have any level of redemption.

I'd say getting back to the playoffs, or at least having a record good enough to get into the playoffs most years. And I don't think I'd excuse Hendry even if there are injuries; he's used that excuse once too often. Part of his job is to build a team capable of winning despite injuries.

That's very true, but how realistic is it to expect to win when the injuries are basically season ending, happen early in the year and involve arguably your two best players? I agree that he needs to provide better bench and depth options and that that is part of his job, but no GM is going to be able to adequately replace Lee and Prior, are they?

Lee, I agree with you. Prior is another story since his injuries are an annual event (although 2006 was the first time they basically ruined his entire season).

JH can't be faulted for what happened to Lee. But not getting a good SP option was one of his big mistakes. .

I know the plan is for Wood to be a reliever, but if he's pitching healthy and the Cubs end up needing a starter (due either to injury or poor performance), does anyone think Wood might return to starting?

I was just thinking about that. I doubt they would risk it early on, but if we're contending towards the end of the year and one of our starters goes down, having Wood on the team could be huge.

I was also thinking about how much talent we're going to have with our pitchers. I dont know how much quality we'll get, but we have pitchers that have put up these types of numbers:

Prior: 18-6 2.43

Zambrano: 16-8 2.75

Wood: 14-11 3.20

Miller: 15-4 3.28

and think if we add Zito: 23-5 2.75

I'm going to pretend that they'll all put up those numbers next year, nobody tell me otherwise.

Prior is going to be the biggest key to any World Series hope next year.

It's November and the annual "If Prior is back by May...." talk has already started.

Get a journeyman replacement *NOW*, Jim. Don't wait to see if Marky Mark will play. March will roll around and all your options will be gone, just like last year. Besides----we could use a halfway-decent mid-level starter in any event.

Badger is a truly happy Cub Fan. I guess I can change my sig.

:D

A True Cub, a classy player, and loyal to his core. Will always be my favorite Cub. I hope he can turn it around.

Anyone check to see if CubbieRich took his life? Or went on a murderous rampage?

Agreed. There should be absolutely no reason for us or Hendry to count on Prior in any way.

Cubs.com with the details about Wood's incentives:

Wood's new contract with the Cubs includes several incentives. Among them are monetary rewards for appearances, ranging from $300,000 for appearing in 40 games to $500,000 if he appears in 60 games. There's also incentives for games finished that range from $200,000 for 25 games finished to $500,000 for 50 games finished. And if Wood is on the active roster for 90 days, he'll pick up an additional $250,000.

Both he and pitcher Wade Miller also can receive additional money if they are named Comeback Player of the Year in 2007.

Me too. Hendry really did get the job done right with Wood, Aramis and Miller. Now if he could just figure out how to use those negotiating tactics with NEW players...
