do the ray's have a ss? maybe they would be interested in cedeno & marshall for rocco if he's available.

They got Ben Zobrist in the Huff trade from Houston. He's not gonna be a star, but probably has more upside than Cedeno. Good defensively. Good patience in the minors. Looks to be a decent hitter for average.

I think Tampa would be stupid to consider trading any of their talent for a position player. They need pitching desperately.

These are the kind of players (Baldelli & Crawford) that the Cubs ought to be going after if they're available. Young players who can contribute next year and in the future. Forget the rumors about Bonds or Alou. An OF of Murton, Baldelli/Crawford, and Pie would be set for the next decade.

Baldelli would be a great addition. I love the idea of adding young players who are already tied up for the next few years. Where was the source that said Baldelli was available? I have only heard that Crawford was.

Got it from Ken Rosenthals latest:

"Devil Rays outfielder Elijah Dukes is tearing up the Arizona Fall League, and the Rays envision him possibly getting 400 at-bats next season as a fourth outfielder, first baseman and DH. B.J. Upton and Ty Wigginton figure to compete for the Rays' third-base job, but Upton could make his long-anticipated move to the outfield if the team trades left fielder Carl Crawford or center fielder Rocco Baldelli."

I'd be much more excited about a trade for any of the tampa OF's than Vernon.

Bruce, any chance you could pass this Baldelli idea onto Hendry? I would be psyched if we could have Baldelli as our Cf next year. Would you guys want him to leadoff, bat 2, or lower in the order?

Of course it is for a couple of reasons:

1: Crawford and Baldell are both about 2 yrs younger then Wells.

2: Both Crawford/Baldelli are locked up for the forseeible future. Whereas Wells is a FA after 2007 who is looking for Johnny Damon type money.

If Hendry passes on Crawford and/or Baldelli for Wells, we really need to question his ability to make "smart trades."

Would you do Marshall and Novoa or another propect for Baldelli? He is a young good CF who has speed, great range, some pop, and hes rumored to be on the block for some pitching. Would you do it? and would the Rays do it?

I would do that in a heartbeat.

If Hendry is serious about being locked into DeRosa and Izturis in the middle infield (let's hope those are just words, and not his true thoughts), then a guy like Baldelli added to the lineup is only sufficient if they also upgrade over Jones in right, or go with aces for the rotation. You can talk about being able to win with mediocre offense all you want (and we're still a step below mediocre), but you can only do that with an amazing pitching staff. And the Cubs do not have anything resembling an amazing pitching staff, and they won't have one if they just get innings eating above average guys. Baldelli is okay, but he's not special, and he's not reliable. He could have a huge breakout year in 2007, but you don't build a winning team around "coulds".

if the cubs do trade for baldelli, they will have a very right handed lineup with jones the only starting lefty. he did have a .871 ops with 16 hr's & 10 sb last year in only 364 ab's. he might be a jason bay type player if the cubs can snag him from the Drays. Edited by mg420
