Has Hendry made any statements about him?
Jim Hendry - I can't believe I traded Ricky Nolasco for this guy, I am truly a moron.
thanks for not cracking yet another fat joke

The less I hear about him the better. I think he will end up being a late signer because noone is going to pay him what his agent is going to try to show he is worth. Teams are going to look at cheaper alternatives like Lofton and Roberts and wonder why they would pay a lot more for Pierre

When Pierre was not traded at the deadline I expected he would be a focal point of attention as soon as the season ended. Instead, we hear nothing. Just seems odd to me.

This is just my feeling but I think it was a combination of him being upset that Dusty left and Lou saying to Hendry " are you freaking kidding me - that is not going to be my lead off man!"

Hendry has talked about Piniella having a "different idea" about bench guys, which I took as him not wanting to the uber-versatile no bat types, rather preferring guys who can actually produce a little. That might cost a little more than Hendry envisioned for the bench, which could rethink the amount of value he places on roles like "leadoff hitter" and other positions.

Who thunk that up?? If Piniella has caused Hendry to change his philosophy on bench guys, get rid of Pierre and pushed him to resign Aram then his tenure is already almost more successful than Dusty's before he has managed a single game

I wonder if Boston would deal Crisp for Pierre and a reliever? By the end of last season, their bullpen was in bad shape and they weren't real happy with Crisp underperforming (although some believe it was due to some lingering injuries).

Crisp has a weak arm in CF like Pierre, and he's the same type of leadoff hitter Pierre is in not taking many pitches or having a high OBP, but I personally think he has a much higher ceiling that Pierre does.

Just a thought

Pierre's a free agent.

Pierre is not under the Cubs control.

Neither is Aramis Ramirez, but we're hearing a lot about him. I just don't see why Hendry didn't trade Pierre on Jul. 31 if he was going to be so disinterested in him come October. It doesn't make sense and it's not what I expected.

Maybe he has come to his senses and realizes that Pierre at the most is worth a couple of million and still should be at the bottom of the order. I am thinking Sweet Lou has cooled Hendry on Pierre though.

from a muskbag...

Will the Cubs try to re-sign Juan Pierre? He is exactly what the Cubs have been looking for in a leadoff hitter. If not, why not?

did this guy sleep through last season or what??

Unfortunately, far too many people still think that. They see the stereotypical leadoff man, and decide he's a perfect fit, without putting a second of thought into the stats (besides low K and high SB).

For some reason, it's been a lot easier for many people to overlook Pierre's overall weak numbers by dismissing his poor April and May to a fluke, than it has for them to accept Ramirez's overall good numbers, because of his poor start.

To her credit, Muskat seems to think Pierre ain't all that.

that's an interesting point. didn't couch's article that ripped ramirez advocate re-signing pierre? i think, for those people, the fact that pierre hustles leads them to make excuses for pierre and hate ramirez.

Finally, indications that Hendry and the Cubs are getting OBP. Muskat pretty much goes with whatever baseball knowledge is handed to her by those guys. To hear her bag on Pierre's OBP skills, or lack thereof is very heartening, IMO.

It's too bad they are comming to the realization at such a late date and with a depleted talent pool. Imagine if Hendry would have had the epiphany when the Cubs had a lot of power.

Yeah, it sucks, but better late than never. It's not just Hendry getting it, it's the "baseball guys."

but we're kind of lucky that he also had this realization while the nl was very weak. now is the time to make a go for it.

This is what I'm clinging to this off-season. The Cubs have a lot of problems to address, but the NL central sure looks winnable for the next couple of years with a decent team.

Then, who knows, a team might get hot in the playoffs and win the world series in an upset.
