I'm glad Dusty is gone, but I'm going to remain skeptical of Lou. I'm in a place right now where I need to see to believe. He's gonna have to show me.

OK, Thomas.

Is it just me, but I think it might be fun to watch a team of 8 midgets who walk all the time. I'm worried about how the midgets perform on defense though.

Jim Hendry has decided he likes fast slap-hitting midgets that catch the ball.

I liked almost everything he said. I definitely got the impression that they are gonna spend a lot of money this offseason. I also like his comments on not waiting for the 3 run homer. I think that is something that the Cubs need to get away from(sitting back and waiting for the big bomb). It also seems like his coaching staff is very important and plays a big role in the team. Due to this they better hire some good guys. Not happy about Rothschild being back, but oh well.

LETS ENJOY WORLD SERIES BASEBALL, THEN FIRE UP THAT HOT STOVE!!!

The Cubs got away from the "wait for the 3 run homer" approach last season. They tried to make things happen on the basepaths, and do the little things.

It didn't work out well.

They still had to wait for the homer because Hendry has yet to build an all around solid lineup. I know they said they weren't waitng for the big homer but they still did.

Do they all get along, though?

You think I should have blind faith in Lou? That hasn't worked real well for me in the past with Cubs managers.

I was just joshin' ya. The proof is in the pudding...and words can be cheap. But I do like what I hear.

Yes. They will all ride to field in the same car.

No they didn't. They knew they couldn't hit homers and tried to make things happen.

I recorded the interview from WGN radio. It's available for downloading or listening here:

http://www.4shared.com/dir/977989/c80d2d05/sharing.html

The file is 101706_piniella_press_conf.mp3.

Unfortunately, WGN Radio didn't carry the full press conference and cut away about 13 minutes into it. The audio recording begins as Hendry is finishing up his brief intro remarks.

Piniella will be on WGN Radio Sports Central tonight. The show runs from 7-9pm; they didn't give a specific time.

I didn't realize they all had to be partially bald midgets.

That would save the Cubs millions on travel expenses.

They shaved their heads as a gesture of team unity.

I was impressed by the overall press conference as I saw it on ESPNews during lunch.

The three things that impressed me the most were:

- specific mention on hitting philosohpy of swinging at strikes and swinging in hitters' counts.

- specific mention of pitchers' philosophy of throwing strikes.

- specific mention of believing in young talent.

These are the things I wanted to hear. Cut down the pitching walks and increase the offensive walks. Trust the young players in the middle of the proven talent.

I do believe it's from the Clerks cartoon.

You can't try and get away from the things you've never been near.

3-run homers are good things. Sac bunts and making things happen waste outs and decrease your run totals, and are therefore bad things.

Thank you. I wanted to respond with exactly that, but didn't want to open a whole can of worms in this thread.

Waiting for the 3 run homer is what I wish we'd do (or the 2 run double). If you have guys who get on base and hit for power, there would be plenty of opportunities for it, and you'll win plenty of games doing it.

I cannot believe the complete disrespect in this thread shown to those who are vertically challenged. It was horrific enough when Lou said it, but to be repeated over and over (and done in addition to quoting Lou) is just mind boggling in this day and age. I am completely baffled that I am the first person to mention this atrocity. After Mr. Lyons comments that he was terminated for, so many were up in arms. I say now, where is the love for those who are vertically challenged? Do they not also deserve equal treatment? Will Lou be thrown in jail? Does Lou have violent thoughts and/or animosity towards those who are not tall? If he would so callously use the term in the middle of a press conference with everyone watching; how does he act towards height challenged people when no one is watching? This is disturbing, very troubling indeed.

I think what I like most is that he pooh-poohed all the stupid excuses that Dusty used - none of this crap about injuries, day games, curses, etc. Find a way to win. Every manager exudes confidence in their introductory press conference, but at least it seems like he isn't going to put up with the bull crap that went on during Dusty's reign of error.

He was just on ESPN radio too. And he was talking about knowing the fans want to win, and saying the management and higher ups were all on the same page about aggressively wanting to win now. And he liked that. And that he liked expectations. .

Didnt the Cubs live and die by the long ball in 04? Didnt work. Only chance they had to win was win the wind was blowing out. Waiting on the 3-run homer is not smart.

What happens when you dont have that 3-run homer? Then how are the Cubs going to win? Small ball to some on this site dosent work.

Give me a balanced of attack on offense, a solid rotation, a deep bench, and a bullpen that can hold down the opponents in the late innings. Thats how Hendry should construct the 07 Cubs.

What happens when you don't get the 3-run HR? You still have 2 guys on base.
