I don't how this got into racism and the hypocrisy of the Cardinals org, but my point is that Michael Jordan is a jerk, Tiger Woods is a jerk, Ted Williams was a jerk, etc etc. I really don't care if people like him, as long as Albert is breaking laws, rules, or doing something loathesome (racism) I don't really care how nice he is to the media. As long as he keeps putting up insane offensive production he can be a douche to whoever he wants, especially considering he is by all accounts a positive clubhouse influence, a good man in the community and not a criminal.

This thread should have ended with this post from Wolf, which I agree 100% with. On class, Bonds isn't even in the same ballpark as Pujols.

Let's face it, the game has changed. Players -- and not just the superstars -- tend to do more "antics" these days (staring down umps, flipping bats, snub the media, etc) compared to yesteryear players. To be honest I wish ARam would show some of the competitive fire Pujols does.

I don't see what's wrong with respecting a players ability while at the same time acknowledging his jerkitude. What is wrong with pointing out that a guy is a jerk?

Fine - he's a jerk. So was MJ, worshipped by Bulls fans everywhere. Admit it, no one here would be calling Pujols a jerk if he were a Cub.

True, nobody ever called Sosa a jerk.

Nice to see that Voice of Reason is showing just what an oxymoron his name is.

As a reminder, NSBB etiquette calls for attacking the post, not the poster, although trust me my feelings are not the least bit hurt. I guess in this case it's much easier for you to shoot the messenger than to try to challenge some of the valid points the author made that evidently hit home.

If you think they are valid points, I am happy for you to revel in your blindness.

Are you disputing the writer's contention that:

Quote:

For years, decades even, players in every sport have spoken with the media after tough losses. Players can handle it, even the "very best competitors," provided they aren't jerks. Bonds couldn't handle it, but he was a jerk. Steve Carlton and Kevin Brown couldn't handle it, either, but they were jerks. After a period of time, those titles became accepted: Steve Carlton = jerk.

If Pujols isn't careful it'll happen to him, and if you're wondering why it hasn't happened yet, look at his address. He plays in St. Louis, a town that for years has looked the other way for its best baseball players. For example, I'm writing this story from the Enos Slaughter Room. Slaughter was behind a near-boycott in 1947 when the Cardinals objected to the color of Jackie Robinson's skin. In some places a player gets maligned for that sort of thing. In St. Louis he gets a room named after him.

Whatever makes you happy man, just gotta love that in your eagerness to lambast anything and everything Cardinal that you lose all REASON as well as perspective. One has to feel pity for such small minds.

The previous "comparisons" to Reggie White and Kirby Puckett are laughable. A little history lesson is in order.

Slaughter had 2,383 hits, including 169 homers, and 1,304 RBI in 2,380 games in his career. He retired in 1959 and became eligible for the Hall of Fame in 1964, but was not elected until 1985

The reason Slaughter was kept out was because of his part in the Cardinals attempted strike in 1947, when Robinson became the first black player in the major leagues. National League president Ford Frick stepped in, threatening harsh action against the players. "If you do this, you will be suspended from the league,'' Frick told the Cardinals. "You will be outcasts. I don't care if half the league strikes. Those who do it will encounter quick retribution. This is the United States of America and one citizen has as much right to play as another.''

In August 1947, Slaughter spiked Robinson in a play at first base but said it was unintentional. The Dodgers were livid. "All I know is that I had my foot on the inside of the bag. I gave Slaughter plenty of room,'' Robinson said.

Sarcasm noted, but my point is the same as wolf's. Very very few of us were complaining about Sosa's "jerkness" while he was putting up monster numbers.

Pujols clearly does a lot for the community, e.g. his Family Foundation charity. He's going to have to do a lot worse than snub a few members of the media or flip his bat after going yard for me to call him a "jerk".

That's cool. I don't spend much time thinking about his jerkiness either. I just don't get the point in chastising somebody who actually does point out that he's a jerk. It would be one thing if he was saying Cards fans should boo Pujols and demand his release because of his jerkiness, but it seems like he's just pointing it out. I think it's a good thing when jerks are exposed......unless it's me, in which case I don't think we should talk about jerks.

out of all these things, his whining to the umpires bothers me the most because the umpires listen. although with the NLCS crew, it has to be confusing to hitters and pitchers.

I think whoever is controlling this series set the umpire option to "variable strike zone."

The unmitigated gall of a Cub fan to post an article (written by a national writer) in the Rivalries section of a Cubs fans website that doesn't totally kiss the butt of the Cardinal heroes (past and present), local media, organization and "the best fans in baseball."

I should be lynched - good thing Enos Country Slaughter is no longer around.

I don't remember chastising anyone - what I said was that the thread should have ended with wolf's post. If Pujols is a jerk then so are at least half the players in MLB. And I certainly don't get the Bonds comparison.

Whatever happened to attack the post and not the poster?

I think we can all form our own opinion of who is being myopic. Please stop the personal attacks on all sides. This discussion is not going anywhere at this point.

I think the problem is the hyperbole and the announcement that Albert Pujols is now the biggest jerk in baseball when in realty he's just got a case of the red a**es.

Does Albert Pujols have his own easy chair that nobody else can sit in? No.

Does Albert Pujols have his own big screen TV that nobody else on the team can watch? No.

Day after day does Albert Pujols have little or minimal interaction with him team members? No.

I can be quite pleasant, having a reasonable and rational discussion with those posters actually wanting to have a discussion.

You're claiming you can be reasonable and rational, but I'm seeing four personal attacks right there from you.
