That would have to mean he isn't convinced his current team is a contender.

How do you figure that?

If he isn't convinced a new guy could make them a contender, he's obviously not convinced they are currently a contender.

We had the chance to add a big guy and we didn't do it.

I'm prepared for another early exit in the playoffs.

Right now we're tied for the 5th seed. The 4th seed is Toronto. We'd beat them. The top seed is Detroit. We've proven we can beat them, too.

Frankly, nothing in the East matters until playoff time.

At the price of two from Hinrich, Nocioni, Deng and Gordon. No thanks.

I'm not just talking about Gasol. I'm talking about someone like Abdur-Rahim or Randolph who we could've had for much cheaper than Gasol.

I'm not so sure if we'd beat Toronto considering they just beat us once at the UC last week. Plus we only beat them by two earlier at home.

The only guy that can stop Bosh is the guy that Skiles hates playing for some reason. I think we can beat any team in the East on any given night, but in a best of 7 series? I'm not so sure about that.

But to acquire the new guy, he'd give up two parts of the current team. Paxson is saying Gasol minus two parts of the current team will not be anymore of a contender.

I could easily see them getting to the NBA Finals, the East isn't all that great.

That's specious reasoning. If the price for the new guy were too high, adding the player wouldn't improve the team.

I can't see the Bulls wanting Abdur-Rahim. His numbers are pretty poor this year and he's got three years left on a bad contract.

I think you're fooling yourself if you think it would've taken less than Deng or Gordon to land Randolph. More importantly, I didn't see any reports about him being seriously shopped.

And the Bulls beat them by 10 at Toronto. So the Bulls are 2-1 against the Raptors this year and the one point loss at the UC last week was the first time the Raptors had beaten the Bulls in like 14 games. I know Toronto's the flavor of the moment in the East, but I don't think they're a better team than the Bulls.

That's not how he phrased it. He tried to make it look like Gasol wasn't even that much of a guarantee, no matter what the price was, and the fact that it was a high price just made it less of a reason to trade for him.

It's basically sour grapes along the lines of "I didn't even really want it anyway".

You're seeing a lot more in that blurb than I am, and I still don't follow how that makes it clear that Paxson isn't convinced his current team is a contender. He certainly was reluctant to mess with its core.

Which is odd to me since this core seems to be stuck in neutral in the land of mediocrity. I thought this team was supposed to be much better than a 6 seed.

I'm not surprised; you were writing the team off in November.

Gordon and Deng both have made signigicant strides this season. They'll be all-stars in a year or two, and the Bulls are 2 games out of the 3 seed with a relatively easy schedule to finish the season. Looking forward to seeing how it all shakes out.

and they are scuffling, in part, because Nocioni isn't playing

And because Ben Wallace has been bad.

Good point about that game in Toronto. That one slipped my mind.

I still would have a hard time believing how we could stop both Bosh and Bargnani. I really believe that Toronto would be a worse matchup for us than say Detroit because of the Raptors big men.

Had Paxon not wasted his pick on Tyrus THomas, and drafted Brandon Roy, we could have easily packaged Gordon + Noc for Gasol, and not missed a beat with Roy at the 2 guard.

And don't even get me started on giving up JR Smith for nothing.

John Paxon needs to go.

Not a fan of him locking up Hinrich long-term for less than market value?

If Tyrus proves to be a wasted pick -- and it's difficult to overstate how early it is to be making that claim -- it would be John's first. He certainly wasn't the only GM or scout to think Tyrus was the best prospect in the '06 draft.

And every report out of Memphis had the Grizzles demanding Gordon and Deng for Gasol. Again, no thanks.

Basically you'd want any and every GM fired.

ETA: And you apparently have already decided TT is a wasted pick.

I didn't join this board till after the draft so I can't point out how much I was against the TT pick. So you will have to trust me. I also read many scouting reports that said Thomas' offensive game was light years away.

While the general consensous was that Brandon Roy was the most NBA ready player in the draft, which has proven true. So if we are ready to win now(as inidcated by the Ben Wallace signing) why draft a player that is so far away? Why not grap a player than can help you immediatly?

As for Deng & Gordon I never heard both of these. I heard Deng or GOrdon and another player such as Noc and or draft pick.

Tyrus Thomas is Stromile Smith part II. There are plenty who think the same.

Why not let the kid prove whether he's a bust or not, rather than labeling him based on half a season with limited playing time and some scouting reports?

Why? Because they are both athletes? Both former Top 5 picks? Both from LSU? I think it's abit TOO EARLY to compare T2 to Swift. Atleast give the kid the benefit of the doubt.

The Bulls are no better/no worse then where they were before the deadline, which means they are still a likely one and done in the playoffs. For this...Paxson had better be dang sure he'll get a Top 3 pick courtesy of the Knicks and/or getting Gasol/KG in the offseason, otherwise, this will be a blemish on Pax's resume.

Whether or not you thought Thomas was the player with the highest ceiling is moot. I love to scour the Web for draft information, too, but that doesn't make my opinion of draft talent any more expert.

I agree with the draft-for-ceiling-and-not-need policy when you have a high pick.

Look at the stories printed in the Memphis papers. West wanted Deng and Gordon. Many thought he could be talked down, especially the Chicago beat writers, but we don't know for certain.

I watched him plenty in the college as well, he can jump out of the gym, but what low post moves does he have? His offensive game is as raw as it comes. So even if he does become a decent player down the road, it was still a bad pick because this team is built to win now.
