This from the New York Daily News today:

Sheffield is gone regardless, but if the Yankees fail to advance to the ALCS, Mussina has very likely pitched his last game here, A-Rod may well wind up on the trade block and even Torre's job status will become a matter of conjecture. Even though George Steinbrenner has gotten older and seemingly more detached, you have to believe the most humiliated Yankee of all by Rogers' effort last night was indeed The Boss.

I think that Mussina would be a good addtion to thie team. He would be that durable #2 guy that we are looking for behind Big-Z. I know he is getting older(is 38) but for a two year deal I think he would work well. He has pitched over 175 innings a year for the past 10 years, which proves he is durable. Just a thought.

No on Sheffield and no on Mussina. Both will probably want multi-year deals and for big bucks. However, Shef may retire.

If we were able to unload Jacque or decided to try Jacque at CF, I'd be interested in Sheffield on a one-year deal with an option for the second.

If Sheffield gets healthy, he could be a formidable bat in the middle of the order.

Ha, I could see a pathetic organization like the Cubs going after a stop-gap solution like Sheffield vs. getting a long term solution like Soriono.

Soriano is hardly a long-term solution. He's already 30, and he's having a career year in his contract year, which seems vaguely familiar from some Beltre guy in Seattle...

Sheffield IS a stopgap, but so what? He's probably going to be a lot cheaper than Soriano next year and has a decent chance at being similiarly productive.

I'd say 1 year contract, move Jones to center, let Pie develop another year in the minors, and move Jones back to right in 08 when Pie is ready. If Sheffield doesn't want a 1-year contract then you don't sign him.

For the right price I would love to have them both next year.

I would offer Sheff 1 year at 8 or 9 Million. I would offer Mussina 2 years at $12 per or 3 years at 10-11 per. A rotation of Z, Mussina, Hill, Padilla, Prior with a 3-4-5 of Lee, Aramis, Sheffield is a good start. Then try to upgrade a middle infiled spot and/or CF.

30 -33 is the prime age for many MLB players.

I don't view Soriono as a Beltre who simply juiced to get his contract.

I agree completely. Beltre did little before his contract year and then exploded that year. Soriano has always been decent and has put better numbers than Beltre did in LA.

Don't want Mussina anywhere near the Cubs. Sheffield would be an interesting option. I'd take Sheff on a 1-year deal, but he'd be far from my 1st option and he better not be the only upgrade. If the Cubs get Sheffield, it would have to NOT be at the expense of Murton. A solid hitting 2B and CF would have to be brought in.

FWIW, according to the Fielding Bible, Sheffield is far and away the worst defensive RF in baseball. His +- was something like -38 the past 3 years and the next worst was like -16

He's not a very good 1st baseman either! :D

My ideal 2007 team originally included Mussina, until I really looked at his numbers. After really looking at him, I'd definitely pass on him now.

As for Sheff, I'd go after him as a last resort if Jacque were traded. Otherwise, no thanks on him. Even though I've always been a fan of his.
