What are your top 5 targets for Jim Hendry. Please don't include Ramirez or Z or even the manager right now, just try to put down some realistic targets of guys that might be available or free agents. Mine:

1-ARod

2-Schmidt

3-Drew

4-AJones

5-Zito

Replace Jones with Crawford and put Lugo and Loretta at the bottom and you have my list.

Jones might only be a 1 year rental.

Why do you like Loretta so much? He reminds me of a weaker hitting version of Walker.

True about Jones but that would Hendry's job to get him signed long term.

Here goes

1. ARod

2. Manny......If he wants to be traded and Sox eat some $$

3. Miggy Cabrera.....I'm not totally sold on the idea he is not avaiable for the right package.....and would be nice if ARam opts out

4. Schmidt

5. Zito, or C. Lee

Darn I forgot about Cabrera!

Obviously, if Rodriguez is available, he's at the top. I'd follow him with Cabrera and then Manny. I don't really think all three of those are available, but if they are, I'd want them.

The next tier of guys would be Andruw Jones, Marcus Giles, and Adam Dunn, and Drew. I'm fairly certain Jones and Giles could be had. The other two guys are ify.

Of the free agen crop, I'd like Schmidt first among the pitchers. I'd probably want any of the above trade targets more than I'd want any of the position free agents, but if those guys prove to be hard to acquire, Soriano tops my list of free agent hitters.

Maybe the way you wrote it is a better idea but I'd like to see the order you'd put the free agents and guys available in trade together. I'd love to see Hendry's big board.

I wrote it that way because I really don't know who's available and at what cost in players and dollars.

Obviously I'd want one of the top tier guys. But if the cost in players becomes too high, I may settle for a lower group.

If for the same cost to get A-Rod, I could have Jones and Giles, I might would rather go that direction.

Cabrera - numero uno because he's pre-prime (upside) and any longterm deal will only take him into his early 30's, at the most - I'd give up a lot.

ARod - SS, or fallback if Ramirez leaves at 3B.

Zito/Schmidt - I'm actually not in love with either, but they desperately need pitching, and there's not a lot of pitchers I'm dying for.

Crawford - Not nearly the upside of Cabrera. Back to back 111 OPS+ seasons doesn't scream star in the making, but he could help this team a lot offensively.

wild card

Abreu - still on my radar in case the Yankees get weird with their OF.

Soriano - I'd take him, but I'm not in love by any stretch.

A. Jones - almost forgot about him. If he means no Pierre, that's good enough for me.

Burrell - I'd take him over Carlos Lee, but only if it means Jones is gone.

C. Lee - See Burrell situation

Padilla - Might be the best of the 2nd tier of pitchers available, unless I'm missing a name out there.

Loretta- career OBP over .360

Cedeno- career OBP of .283

Izturis- career OBP of .295

There are other 2b options. Some won't be Cubs next year. Soriano will probably be somewhere else. Kent will probably be somewhere else. Durham is an option. Giles might be an option.

I'd rather not see Izturis or Cedeno penciled into a starting gig if guys with MUCH better OBP's are available on the market. I like Lugo and Loretta for that reason.

And I've always liked Todd Walker.

Ammended list, assuming Cabrera and Manny are truly available...

1. Cabrera

2. ARod

3. Cabrera

4. ARod

5. Manny

ARod and Cabrera both played for Joe G.........HMMMMM????

He was Bench Coach for ARod

Would Mr. Girardi help this situation?

How could he help it? Neither player will have much if any say in where he is traded. If they were free agents, maybe. As trade targets, not at all.

Doesn't ARod have a no trade in his contract?

I meant he could push these trade ideas on Hendry. Urge the organization in that direction.

I don't think it would take a guy who has managed them to realize that the players would help the Cubs. Pretty much any manager with a pulse should push for these trades to happen.

4. Mussina

I can't comprehend your inclusion of Mussina. He's an old inconsistent pitcher. He could easily be a mediocre 100 ERA+ guy next year, going on his recent track record. He could also easily fail to reach 200 IP again. How in the world can you justify putting him over highly productive lock offensive players.

You are blinded by the need for pitching.

inconsistent picther? first of all, he's fourth on my list. any of those first 3 i would take over him.

no, he's a consistent innings eater that has had 2 below 100 era+ years in his entire career (99 and 98).

no, history doesn't show he's due for a terrible year. his ERA+ was 125 this year, but i guess we can just assume he's bound for imminent disaster because he's 38.

He's always been a decent hitter and I can the attraction to him. Lugo and Loretta would be an interesting middle and give the Cubs a good 8 hitters if they get a decent CF too.
