According to ChicagoSports.com:

The Big Three are former managers: Lou Piniella, Bob Brenly and Joe Girardi, assuming he gets zapped Tuesday in Florida.

They also note that there are two or three minor candidates:

The Possible Two: The next generation of coaches who may be ready, Mets third-base coach Manny Acta and Braves third-base coach Fredi Gonzalez

The Cubs' opening figures to be a popular one, and Brenly definitely will throw his hat into the ring.

I wouldn't mind Joe, or BB. Lou....well....not so much. BB has seen this team play the last 2 years, and seems to know that WALKS ARE important. And has commented many times on Arams lack of hustle. I think he would be a great choice. I'm sure a lot of posters will disagree with me, but it's just my opinion.

how has ramirez's lack of hustle ACTUALLY hurt this team?

I don't know, but some radio host during yesterday's press conference was all excited about the idea of letting Ramirez walk away.

I actually heard several radio hosts and callers with that same sediment this weekend. I don't quite understand it?

This year, did not make a differance at all. However I do recall a game in which had he hustled out of the box he could have gotten a stand-up double. Instead he was thrown out at 2nd. That being said, I'm sure that all MLB players have "those days" during the season, but it seems Aram had them quite often. Don't take that the wrong way, I'm a huge Aramis fan and want the Cubs to do what it takes to keep him. It was just an example. The Cubs need to play good hard baseball. Hard meaning "You get paid a lot of money, and it won't kill you to run full out to first base 4 times a game."

I hope those same idiots enjoy 5th place, because Ramirez walking will be a disaster.

He didn't have them as often as people percieve. The hustle thing is one of my biggest pet peeves about Chicago sports. Only in Chicago would people be clamoring to get rid of a .300/35/110 a year player because of a couple jogged out ground balls.

I wouldn't say only in Chicago. NY has a thing about ragging on productive players who don't fit into their preconceived notion about what a player should be.

You didn't. A lot of others have, which is what I think he's referring to.

Correct, not directed at you JW.

Man, I just read that the Marlins are supposed to announce Fredi during their conference to fire Girardi. I didn't realize they were that close to hiring Fredi. :(

If true, this speaks about Hendry's willingess/ability to do what is best for the Cubs.

He always talks about doing the right thing and making fair deals and treating people right. Theoretically this is to give the Cubs a reputation as a team that is good to deal with. Yet it also can lead to missing the boat on guys. Hendry refuses to even talk about future candidates yesterday, as if he was caught off guard that he'd need a new manager.

This is why you fire Baker in June. This is why you don't wait to the last minute. This is why you don't get an obvious lame duck play out the string when you need to move forward. Hendry is more interested in keeping his good guy image intact than he is in making the Cubs winners. I'm guessing Hendry would play this off as he was looking in another direction anyway.

But there is absolutely no justification for him treating this situation the way he did. The decision could have and should have been handled much earlier, and the candidates could have and should have been lined up already.

Frankly, it shouldn't matter if Dusty was fired in June or yesterday. Girardi was fired today and Fredi is being hired today - the Marlins knew they needed a replacement and were prepared.

I agree. Hendry has, once again, been caught tottally flat footed. At the same time I wonder if Gonzelaz was even a viable candidate.

Absolutely nothing was gained by keeping Baker around.

Braves third-base coach Fredi Gonzalez, who interviewed for the Marlins job last year, is expected to be named Girardi's replacement during a 2 p.m. ET press conference.
