From the Cubs:

The Chicago Cubs’ Derrek Lee today announced that he has teamed up with Boston Celtics lead owner Wyc Grousbeck to help create a foundation to fight a disease that has affected both of their families, Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis.

Leber’s Congenital Amaurosis, or LCA, is an inherited form of blindness that is usually apparent shortly after birth. Their effort, entitled “Project 3000,” includes a plan to raise money to provide state-of-the-art genetic testing for every man, woman and child in the United States with LCA – about 3,000 individuals in all.

Well that more or less answers what is going on with Derrek's daughter. That's a shame.

Sad but she can still live a great life. It could have been a brain tumor or something like that. At least they are fortunate that Daddy is a millionaire and can provide whatever she needs.

It also sounds from the full release like they're close to human testing for a cure. That in and of itself is great news.

If they can even partially alleviate this condition, it'll have been worth the time, money, and effort Project 3000 is going to invest.

So she is going to live but most likely will be blind in both eyes? That's a bit of a relief, but still disheartening to hear that the vision loss is likely to stay.

On the selfish side, its a bit of a relief to know that he won't likely be retiring or anything crazy.

Derrek is one of the few people I can see handling something like this well. Not to preach, but God doesn't put more on people than they can handle. And Derrek and his family will handle this, because he is a strong person from everything I have read about him.

If that's the case, then I want to be incredibly weak.

But seriously, I guess this disease doesn't have a cure. It's kind of surprising that Jada had this happen now. Usually it's a newborn thing, no?

This really has been a messed up season for the Cubs. It's been so bad that losing doesn't even hurt that much by comparison.

The silver lining for the Lees is that it doesn't appear from what I read that this condition is life threatening. It is surely life altering, but at least it doesn't seem that Jada is in any danger.

He said at this point, the vision in one of his daughters eyes is perfectly fine and that at this time its only one eye thats affecting her. So maybe there is some hope for at least partial vision.

Derrek Lee is an incredible person. Assuming he continues to be just as good a baseball player, I want him in a Cubs uniform from now on.

What made you beleive that? That simply is not true. God does not "give" anything, he does not intervene in that way. God didn't give Jada a disease. She was born with it.

Yeah, and I said that where?

God sent plagues. Could he not also give diseases? /canofworms

How about we avoid a Religion discussion?.... Unless you're sending your prayers.

My thoughts and prayers to Derrek, Jada, and the Lees.
