Possibility? Brenly manager, Stone in the booth, Baker ESPN?

Posted (edited)

From today's tribune:

Brenly's contract to provide analysis on Cubs telecasts runs through 2008, and although he's not actively seeking a manager's job, he has had a bird's-eye view of the Cubs' problems.

Coincidentally, former Cubs broadcaster Steve Stone was seen dining recently with John McDonough, the Cubs senior vice president of marketing and broadcasting. Sources insist it was just a social meeting between old friends, but if Brenly gets a managerial job, the door may be open for Stone's return to the Cubs' TV booth.

If Baker doesn't get a managerial job, he figures to draw interest from ESPN as a baseball analyst.

How must-see would Baker be as an ESPN analyst? Seriously.

I glanced at your headline and thought you wrote Stone as GM!

IMO, I think it would be a decent move for McDonough to get Brenly's opinion on what went wrong and how to right the ship and not so much offereing him the manager job.

Baker in the booth!!?!?! That would be freaking hilarious!

In the midst of a game, you might get the inchoherent fishing and bait reference, a strange band analogy referring to injuries, have some secondbaseman referred to as his girlfriend, and a remark about base clogging all in the course of a few hours. Please let this happen!

You could play the "How many times does he mention Aaron" drinking game too.

Dibs on the URL firedustybaker.blogspot.com...although I guess he doesn't need to be in broadcasting for that site to exist, since we all want him canned from his current position.

I would love to see Steve Stone back in the booth next year. :D

I think there is a great chance of that happening.

Over/under on how many times he predicts the hitter K's on a slider low and away?

I'd LOVE to see Stone back in the booth. I don't mean to single you out vance, but I think the low-and-away slider joke has been overplayed. It's not as if Stone never offered a LOT more interesting and non-trivial insights than that.

Over/under on how many times he correctly predicts the hitter K's on a slider low and away?

I don't think it's overplayed. I think Stone's use of that was overplayed. He offered a lot of interesting insights. But by the end, he was just calling for sliders low and away on every pitch.

By the way, Stone wouldn't be back for PBP (play-by-play), he'd be the color man, or analyst. Len is the PBP guy.

I almost felt like he was just mailing it in the last month or two he was in the booth. You could tell he wasn't happy with what sides the organization took and their approach to the whole Players vs. Stone issue.

I'd love to see him back, but I also feel like his heart isn't into being a full-time color commentator. He's left that position TWICE now in ten years, for different reasons, but I think it's obvious he WANTS to be front office.

Yeah I dunno about Stoney being back. I've listened to his radio show before, and he's alternatively brilliant and "Mike North stupid".

Plus, he's really grating when he whines.

I heard Kasper is going to manage the marlins, girardi to the booth, and chip caray as GM of the Cardinals.

Write a newspaper column so we can talk about it! :)

It is overplayed, but we all have selective memory on certain things. It's funny ... I remember Stoney for calling for a pitcher to get a guy out with high heat ("look for Prior to run up the ladder again here") much more than the low and away slider.

Ah yes, the old "face high fastball" line. ACtually that was a pretty effective pitch in '03 for our power pitchers.

baker and kruk on espn....oh man....that would be amazing.

Throw Steve Phillips on there for good measure. Or if we can get Dibble to come back... :D

i could do without stone in the booth, thank you. except for the nostalgia, i can't see one reason to hire him. i guess his pitching insights are pretty decent, but other than that, he doesn't know what he's talking about.

i'd prefer brenly to stay, he actually is much more in tune with the modern game than steve "billy beane got lucky" stone.
