why do people consistantly count on Wood and Prior

as far as im concerned the arnt even alive

why do you even CONSIDER them pitching next year?

They get hurt EVERY YEAR

and EVERY YEAR you count on them again

and EVERY YEAR they go down again

its like a kid who gets whipped for doin somthin bad, you dont even try to stop, you just come back for more whippings

STOP COUTING ON THEM, THEY WILL GET HURT AGAIN

SAVE IT!

Nobody is counting on them, people are thinking of ways to include them in case they do come back.

I'm all for trying Kerry in the Bullpen as long as you have backup plans and that he feels so sorry to the fans that he comes back REAL CHEAP, with incentives. .

By "every year" I assume you're referring to the past two years? And Prior did make 27 starts last year. It isnt a good idea to depend on them, but it'd be just as stupid to not have a plan for using them if they are healthy.

look i understand that Prior was great that 18 win season. But he came from the injury and what has he showed after that injury that he is the same as what he once was?

he been pitching and back on the DL what 3 times?

it seems people are still resting his case on that 18 win season...yea he was great but thats over...hes been on the DL on and off ever since, what makes you think he can repeat what he did 3 seasons ago after all the arm trouble?

and the thing about all this is...

what is his injury?

why is he hurt?

is it just soreness? what is it?

If I remember correctly something is slightly torn in his shoulder, I think his rotator cuff.

Last year he went 11-7 with a 3.67 ERA, a .227 OP AVG (better than 03) and a 1.21 WHIP. It wasnt exactly an ace caliber season, but definitely not bad. Its silly to just write him off.

And probably much, much better that whatever free agent acquisition they get this offseason.

considering his buyout is $3 million, I would offer him more than that Vance. I wouldn't use him back to back days though - I would have him throw in more of a goose gossage pattern - 2-3 high leverage innings.

I'm pretty sure its been discussed in the past that buyouts are allocated into the previous season. Stop worrying about Wood's 3Mil. Whatever deal we work out with him will count towards next years payroll, nothing more, nothing less.

God it's funny being billionare's isn't it?

Ok this 3 million will just shove into last year. OK! There we go. Now we have more money this year.

I don't know if the Trib is going to think like that. Remember trib gives hendry his money. .

I wanna say Hendry answered a question to that effect at a Cubs Convention a while ago. So if Hendry said our payroll was X amount of dollars going into a year hes already counting the potential buyouts. If they aren't used the Trib keeps the money, and I know they like that!

Can anyone confirm hearing/remembering this? Maybe my memory is just bad.

I can confirm that. It's not a matter of just shifting money around, it has to do with the way they're accounting for their expenses.

I don't think anyone is counting on Wood as the only option as closer. Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Wuertz and even Mateo (down the line) could slide in there as needed.

I see a lot of trade Dempster and use Wood in a closers role banter about lately. I won't Wood to a bonus to the bullpen next year. I don't want him counted on to the main set up man or the closer , I would prefer to keep Dempster, Howry, Eyre,Wuertz as the core of next years pen. Wood and Marmol could be huge wild cards in next years pen.

Well like it or not there is a budget set for the Cubs baseball organization every year, and it's a good idea to establish how you're going to account for things like buyouts.

If the Cubs pick up KW option, they pay that option/salary during the following year. If they don't pick up the option and buy him out, the buy out is paid this year.

I was pretty impressed watching Wood out of the pen last year against the Cardinals. I saw the gun show 99 several times, heard he was hitting 101. Don't know if anyone can confirm that, but Wood was making one of the best hitting teams in baseball look feeble.

If he isn't going to make it as a starter, I have no doubt that he could make it as one of the games most dominant closers.

Might need to have an alternate closer waiting in the wings, though. If his arm can't handle the pounding having 5 days of rest, how will it handle having to pitch, say, every day for 3 days and then another 2 after 1 day of rest in between? That's the life of a closer at times.

Not that I don't want him. Just saying.

howry can close. marmol needs to be switched to the pen in 2007 imo too so they might as well try him at closing in iowa.

I'd rather see Mateo guided towards that role than Marmol.

Im starting to worry about Howry. His history of arm problems could come up again. He has pitched alot in the past 2 years. Hendry needs to add another bullpen arm.
