I was going to defend the article by pointing out the Baseball America is very careful to separate best player from best prospect; however, after reading that Patterson may need to learn another position because he is blocked by Cedeno I am speechless.

While Pie is extremely young for AAA, it should be pointed out that many of the best prospects skip AAA entirely.

somehow i think ep is way ahead of cedeno as a 2b prospect. i think they will trade cedeno in the offseason.

I doubt they trade Cedeno.

They can let things play out. If Cedeno shows progress next year, he might win 2B. (He's probably got more defensive tools than EPatt, a higher ceiling defensively.) Or, if Cedeno does lousy and Patterson improves, Patterson could win that. Perhaps more likely is that they go outside to acquire a 2B who's better than 2006 Cedeno, so that the job isn't open next year or the year following.

The other thing is that we have no reason to assume Cedeno is long-term for 2B. Maybe he'll do well there, and he'll stick. But, Izturis is on a terminal contract next year. Assuming he isn't worth his salary, they may let him walk and move Cedeno back to SS.

So there are lots of possibilities.

Cedeno is only 2 months older than EPatt. So if we're expecting EPatt to improve with time, I don't see why the same might not apply to Cedeno.

But, who's to know how much either of them will improve, if at all? Time will tell.

Would it hurt the Cubs if they stuck EPatt at 2B in AAA opening day in order to see if his numbers there this season were a fluke or legitimate?

The Cubs have a few in-house options at 2B who could form some sort of platoon or committee (Cedeno, Fontenot, Theriot) depending on what the Cubs want to do at 2B. Then again, they could go out and pick up Soriano or Loretta and make this entire situation moot. The Cubs could also trade any of these guys if they deem it necessary, especially if EPatt draws rave reviews from other scouting departments.

I don't think it would be wise to pencil EPatt in for a starting 2B job on opening day 2007. He still has his share of kinks to work out of his game, which AAA could help significantly.

I don't understand how you can come to the conclusion that Patterson is a better prospect than Pie. It's almost mind-boggling.
I don't think that's what anybody is saying. They're saying that he is the better player at the present time. That's not the same as saying he's a better prospect.

I got the impression that's what BA was saying. And either way, saying his a better player at the present time is almost equally crazy.

Call me stupid, but Scott Moore is probably a better player than Eric Patterson at this time.

.283/.341/.451 - Felix Pie in AAA

.276/.339/.419 - Eric Patterson split between AA and AAA with most of the time in AA.

Forget the fact that Patterson is two years older than Pie, Pie simply hit better at a higher level. Sure Patterson plays 2B, but it's not as if CF is the equivalent to a designated hitter. Eric Patterson did steal 46 bases, and that's gotta be the reason that he may be the better player. Forget the fact those stolen bases were worth about 3.5 runs over the season. Baseball America doesn't understand that stolen bases are generally overrated, especially when you get caught a lot. They make the same mistakes in their league top 20s, see: Derrick Robinson, Nick Van Stratten, Luis Durango and Gorkys Hernandez.

All-Baseball.com's Cub Reporter has an interesting note on Pie. It says that Pie is being used as a designated runner in the AZ Instructional League, multiple times a game, and attempting a steal every time. He is also leading off innings and bunting. It seems the Cubs are giving him a crash course in Lead-Off Man.

Oh great. Just great. :x

He's not a leadoff man by any means...

Is this the Cubs answer to getting guys on base more frequently?

I'd rather have him work on pitch recognition.

I'm pretty sure Pie was leading off this season in AAA as well. The bunting I don't know about. Stealing bases isn't a bad thing provided you do it well, which he was doing the latter part of the season. Use that plus-plus speed.

Right now he's just fast enough to run himself off the bases. Less CS is a good thing. Bunting sucks.

Seconded. I could give a hoot about his ability to steal if he can't get on base to do it.

Why does this organization always assume that because a player has speed that he must become a great bunter and lead off hitter. Isn't the definition of madness doing something over and over again and expecting different results? It really makes perfect sense why this organization hasn't won a World Series since 1908.
