I know a few people have mentioned this idea, and when Wuertz is on, it seems like a great idea...his stuff can be positively filthy and damn near unhittable. That said, however, could he put up consecutive quality appearances on a regular basis? I'd be curious to see if anyone has his stats when he appears two games in a row, but I swear he always has trouble when makes two appearances within two games. Has anyone else noticed this?

Not including today since ESPN doesn't update their splits that fast and I'm too lazy to calculate them in right now:

Wuertz IP H BB ER HR K WHIP ERA K/9 K/BB

0 Days rest 9.1 4 2 0 0 8 0.64 0.00 7.72 4.00
1 Days rest 9.2 6 3 1 0 13 0.93 1.04 12.10 4.33
2 Days rest 6.0 12 3 5 3 4 2.50 7.50 6.00 1.33
6+ Days rest 4.2 6 3 2* 0 5 1.92 4.91 9.63 1.67

*4 Runs Allowed

Last year in a larger sample he wasn't very good on 0 days rest, but still stellar with 1 day off. Of course, even combining the two isn't enough to draw much of a conclusion from.

Yeah, right! Like the Cubs would ever be winning consecutive games going into the 9th inning.

No, seriously, I don't see why he couldn't be. I think any short reliever can close outside of Latroy Hawkins and Kyle Farnsworth.

Next to Kerry Wood, Wuertz is probably my choice for closer in '07.

Personally, I would like to see if the Cubs can acquire Scot Shields. If the Angels didn't have this F-Rod guy closing, Shields would be their closer.

And NO, I don't support Wuertz for closer, simply because closer are ask to work anywhere from 2-4 days in the row (depending on the smarts of the manager) and Wuertz has yet to master pitching solidly on back-to-back outings. So, I prefer to leave Wuertz as a middle reliever.

We just need a manager that will be creative, and if he can't handle the job, like LaTroy, we don't need to see him every ninth inning for the rest of the year.
