Prior for Delmon Young?

Would you guys do it? Yea, the kid might have some mental problems but he can clearly play RF for us. I think it's the time to go young. Prior has let us down year after year. We have some young guys who can join the rotation now. All we need to do is pick up a FA pitcher.

The DRays have no use for Prior. Their window of *possibly* competing is probably 2009-2011 when their next wave of talent comes through (Neimann, Longoria, Davis, McGee, etc) and their wave in now are in their mid to late 20s (Kazmir, Young, Upton, Crawford, etc). Mark Prior would be a free agent by then and I certainly don't see a chance he signs there long term.

I was in a bar last night and I tried to explain to a few Cub fans I met why Baker destroyed Prior and Wood. They had none of it - "This isn't about Baker, they are both soft whimps". These guys were robbed of Cub greatness by a fool and they don't even know it.

Ah it is probably better for them that way. I can't really look at or hear either of their names without feeling sick. I would prefer not knowing the huge role Dusty and the organization played.

right now if we could just get out from under his deal and sign someone that is more dependable. we should have done this with wood last year but didn't we shoudl ahve had tejada for prior, cdeno but we blew that one!

we just can't afford to hope they are healthy...yes, we risk losing a great pitcher but we have wiated 2 full seasons and enough is enough!

We certainly can afford to HOPE they're healthy. What we can't afford is to COUNT ON them being healthy without a solid backup option.

Prior for Young?

If Prior is ever healthy and pitching like he did in 2003, then there would be no way the Cubs would do it. The Rays would do it, if Prior was healthy and under contract for a LONG time. But since he is not, there is no way this deal would happen.

So, considering that Delmon is not a favorite within the DRays management right now, it wouldn't surprise me if the dealt him for a young impact type pitcher, who they could control for a long time.

6 mil a year can be better spent than "hoping" a guy is healthy at least for the third year straight. if we could drop prior to go with wood...we would loosen up 18 mil on those 2 and 9 mil on maddux...that would go a long ways to signing schmidt and zito...and part of a slugger....then if they fall apart we can then start looking at this curse thing

sorry it's time....i just think we missed our window on dealing prior.

Prior's not signed to a long-term deal. Anytime the Cubs want, they can choose to non-tender him and let him go.

It would be a stupendously idiotic move...but it's their choice.

I'm sorry, how do you figure Prior is costing us $6M? Did you just pick a number out of the air?

Sorry dude, but Prior "only" makes $3.65 mill this yr, not the "$6 mill" you say. So letting go of Prior at such a low cost, as Tim would say, would be a stupendously stupid move.

i thought was his salary....

of course hanging on to a guy who has a hand full of games in two years with an era around 5 and has shown no sign of getting better is brilliant.....

and he's not wasting space on the forty man.

Theres 40 guys on the 40man and there are plenty besides Prior who we could complain about wasting space. Besides at this point we could just stick him on the 60 day DL, they dont count against the 40 man :)

Mark Prior made 27 starts in 2005 with a 3.67 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. I'd hardly call that a handful of games, or a bad year. This year was miserable-I don't think anybody would deny that, but before this his worst year of his career was 21 starts with a 4.02 ERA. I don't want to throw out a guy for one terrible year-if he repeats his 2005 and misses some starts, then he'll still be extremely valuable for the team.

that was just a poke at tim becuase he felt we had to deal williams because he was wasting space on the 40 man roster....

and please i am not saying williams=prior, it's just a little joke

Williams was wasting a spot, a valuable spot this offseason when an additional body would need to be protected. Prior is a far greater asset than Jerome Williams.

great stats..but you should probably look at his splits after he was injured. he was horrible and it continued this year. from june on of 2005.

1 start in June (0 ERA), Average (for a MLB pitcher) in July (4.30 ERA), bad in August (5.00 ERA), and back to normal in September (3.45 ERA). His ERA was definitely higher after his injury, yes, but it was still 3.89 Post All Star Break-I'd still take that.
