Hendry is a [expletive] but his dumbest move maybe not trying to get Woody as our closer

afterall he was completely dominant when he was there before

As in Kerry Wood? He's damaged goods, it's time to cut bait with him. Enough of these injury prone players who spend more time throwing towel drills than they do playing in a real game.

id take the risk on him especially with a pay cut, the potential upside with him closing is worth a couple of million, i mean afterall we paid fantastic talent such as neifi perez and glendon rusch for more

I'd take the risk, too, for the right price, with the idea that a non-overworked (ie-free of Baker) Howry could take the role if needed. I also agree with those that suggest that Mateo might make a decent closer down the line if pushed to grow into that role. I like Dempster, but I think this disaster of a season has pushed him over the edge that he was teetering on even when he was consistently closing. Despite the blown saves, I think if he can string together some appearances between now and the end of the year and combine that with his past success and he could still be appealing to teams looking for relief/closer help.

Before we place all the blame on Dempster and Hendry's feet, let's just keep in mind that Dempster has not pitched regularly for pretty much all season. Dusty should be the main culprit in not keeping him fresh and ready for tight game conditions. The past couple times he's been in the game, it's been for mop-up duty.

Meanwhile, Howry clocks in more time than a construction worked on the Dan Ryan.

It's common knowledge that relief pitchers need regular work to stay sharp or else they aren't effective. If there aren't enough save opportunities, they need to be used in non-save situations to stay sharp. Dusty just doesn't understand that concept. How much Dempster's paid has nothing to do with that.

That's an asinine mentality when it comes to relief pitchers.

So if we end up paying Zambrano a huge salary, I should expect him to pitch every 4th or even 3rd game instead of every 5th, just because of what he's paid?

Dempster has certainly been used inconsistently this season-which is a big problem. He is still getting his innings though, I was actually surprised to see him and a person like Howry so close in IP this season.

Howry: 65.2

Novoa: 65.0

Dempster: 62.2

Ohman: 57.0

These 4 lead the way in relief innings. Erye would be right there (he has 52) if not for his injury also.
