With two games left Kansas City leads Tampa Bay by one game for the first pick, and the Cubs are tied with Pittsburgh for third. I'm not sure what the tie-breaker is if they remain tied.

The Pirates would pick before the Cubs. I believe the tie-breaker for the June draft is based on who had the lower record in the prior year.

The Cubs with a one-game lead going into the final day of the season.

Can you feel the excitement?

The Pirates beat the Reds 1-0, meaning the Cubs finish in last place in the worst division in baseball. Good season Cobs!

So we ended up with the #3 pick, eh? While it's not #1, we did end up with the worst record in the National League. Gotta be proud of that accomplishment.

If Wilken goes for another high-risk / high-ceiling type guy, I'm gonna have a fit. The Montanez, Christiensen and Brownlie picks makes me ill.

Doesn't this also me that the Cubs won't give up any picks if they sign a type-A free agent?

They won't give up their first round pick, that's for certain, but not their 2nd - 4th round picks.

Of course, they might do away with compensatory picks completely.

But we could get an extra first rounder if Pierre is a Type A FA. If Ramirez opts out, he'd definitely be a Type A.

Do we forfeit those picks if we grab some Type A's of our own? I think it's pretty likely we sign at least one Type A, if not more.

I don't think you do, but I may be wrong.

No. The beauty of the situation (if comp picks still exist) is that we cannot lose our first rounder or any of the comp picks we receive for losing type A free agents. So if we sign three and lose two type A's (and the teams are all 15-30), we'd have 3 first rounders, 2 supplemental firsts and no 2-4th rounders.
