Rich Hill is too good for this team.

True, but I like him anyway.

Dodgers have a pretty solid pitcher in Derek Lowe going tonight against Marshall, who pitched like crap last time out.

Other Fecal League Action:

TB: Corcoran (4-7, 3.96) @

NYY: Mussina (13-6, 3.72) --- not looking good for the D-Rays

MIL: Capuano (11-10, 3.49) @

PIT: Chacon (6-5, 6.80) --- Chacon is horrible; probably a Pirates loss

KC: Hernandez (5-9, 6.39) @

CLE: Sowers (7-3, 3.35) --- Another pitching mismatch

I'll be happy if the Cubs can lose and even one other team wins... this does not look promising for the Cubs to make up ground on anyone.

Well, one game is over already... D-Rays gave up 9 to the Yankees in the first inning, including 6 runs knocked in by Bobby Abreu.

You know my one regret about this trading deadline...

Let's hope for a KC win tonight. Looking pretty good that the Cubs are going to lose, since they're already down 6-0 in the 2nd inning.

Unlike Hill, Bynum is a team player and doing his best to help the Cubs win this race. Three errors in two innings is called taking one for the team. :D

Would you still trade Z for Abreu?

If by "Z" you mean a similar package to the one the Yankees paid, then yes. I also would have guaranteed the extra year on his deal to get him to agree to the trade.

SIX Cub errors. Tied in the 9th after a 7 run comeback, but we're not to be denied. There's actual drama here. It's almost actually exciting.

Dempster is the best thing that's happened to this race.

That inning was hardly Dempster's fault.

BOO, talk about a wasted opportunity. Kansas City wins and the Cubs have a golden opportunity to pull within three games, but they blow a 7-0 deficit. Even 6 errors isn't enough to get the job done. Time is running out; they can't afford to blow games like this.

On the bright side, even if we end up with the third pick, maybe the BPA will sign with Boras and easily slide to the Cubs due to signability.

With KC & TB possibly ahead of us (at # 1, & # 2), that could be a distinct possibility.

I'm assuming this has been asked, but have they done away with the AL/NL/AL/NL thing for draft picks?

You assume correctly. :D

But to answer the question, it was changed a couple of years ago (I'm not sure exactly what year). It's now based strictly on record without regard to league.

I haven't really paid much attention to the draft since the Prior/Tex debates.

According to wiki, 2005 was the first year they did it without regard to league.

We've fallen back into 3rd place with the victory last night, combined with a Tampa Bay Loss. We're now a half-game back of Tampa Bay and 3 games back of KC for the first pick.

I know, the last two nights have been heartbreaking victories for the Cubs. It just breaks you heart, to see this team play so according to their ability, and in spit of that pull victory out of the jaws of defeat. But I am confident, that their heads will be out of their butts tonight, and they get back to the ball that have made their season.

Let's go Cubs, let's get our buts kicked.

56-90 0.0 Royals

58-88 2.0 Cubs

57-88 2.5 Rays

60-87 3.5 Pirates

63-83 7.0 Nationals

Ummm...

That would make the Rays 1.5 "back" of the Royals, not 2.5.

Easier way to look at it is winning%.

Royals - .384

Rays - .393

Cubs - .397

Pirates - .408

Nationals - .432

Orioles - .434

The Nats and Orioles are probably only pretenders to the crown... I mean, it was even a surprise to see the Orioles had done that badly. Obviously, they have no place in the competition... and their proximity to the Nats eliminates them as well.
