The rostering of Buck Coats was so stupid.

only if you'll miss him if another team grabs him when he's derostered. In the meantime, Buck gets rewarded for his years of effort in the minors with at least a taste of the bigs and a chance to show himself on the big stage.

Well in a vaccum it's a fine move, I just fear Hendry keeping him on the 40 man.

So it wouldn't the be rostering that would be stupid, then. It would be leaving him on the 40 man during the offseason that would be stupid.

At this point, I wouldn't be upset if any of these names were taken, as I don't see any of them being able to help the big league Cubs anytime soon, so who cares? The only exception in my book is Rapada, that wicked sidearm from the left side is sweet, he's the one name you must protect. Otherwise, meh.

I like Holdzkom's upside, Piggy has done nothing but improve each year, and McGahee looks solid too. But honestly, you could replace those same three names with Wellemeyer, Mitre and Sing for example, and see that it isn't all too critical to get excited about these things. None of these kids are ready for the majors.

BTW, the non-protection of Andy Sisco looks pretty sound with 20-20 hindsight. He's targeted for AAA in 07 according to the last blurb in the Kansas City Star. So we've really lost no one of true value in the Rule 5 on Hendry's watch that I can recall.

Except we don't know what would have happened if he could have stayed in the minors and stayed a starter. Of course he might not have gotten back into shape if he had been rostered by the Cubs.

Coulda been good as trade value too.

With respect to Sisco,

I never understood why Sisco spent this past year in the majors. Given the Royal's dismal prospects this past year, I would have had him work as a starter in AA/AAA this past year. Perhaps his demotion is a good sign. Maybe he's being given a chance to start.

With respect to Cherry, I guess this means he's healthy. Given his injury record in college and as a Cub (TJ surgery and his finger injury this year), I wasn't so sure.

50 K in 29 AA innings isn't bad. Yes he' s old, but I'm not sure how much that matters when projecting pitchers.

Why Let Dope go so early?

Maybe the notion that he doesn't have a position is playing a part. Perhaps he'll be thrown in a trade to an AL team.

Holdzkom played his way off and, as weather2 noted, Cherry obviously is healthy. I'd say the biggest surprise for me was Fox.

Roster is pretty full, and the cast of prospects this year is really weak. That Cherry was rostered probably is good news in terms of how they view his health. That Campusano was not rostered is not good news in terms of how they view his health. That Fox was not rostered is as expected, but probably also is not good news in terms of how they view his defense.

I'm assuming that they haven't and won't deroster anybody for a while still, since Soriano hasn't actually signed yet, and who knows if FA's like Aram, Wood, or DeRosa have actually signed. If Hendry doesn't get around to siging them formally for a while, perhaps that gives him a little extra time to see whether some of the projected roster fullness might be alleviated via a quantity-for-more-quality trade.

Don't see how one can judge that based on an injury-plagued year. This is trade low, I wouldn't trade Dopirak right now at all.

And Brian is still on the 40-man.

EDIT: I agree with what Craig said in regards to Fox, this is an indictment on Jake's chances of sticking at C.

I would not hesitate to include Dopirak in just about any trade that makes the big league team better right now. He's not worth holding out of negotiations.

Ok, I take back what I said in my last post, I certainly would trade Dopirak if I get some good value. I meant to say the Cubs probably wouldn't be able to improve the team much in a Dopirak trade, and if that's the case, I'd rather hold on to him and try to improve his value.

I also think most teams would be interested in other, better Cubs prospects who are more likely to reach the major leagues.

.....

His .663-OPS year at WTenn was injury-impacted. I don't think his .670-OPS year at Daytona was injury-plagued, though.

his confidence was hurt? :)

The only other surprise to me was Pignatiello. He's a lefty, a local kid, and has pitched well, how does he not rate a 40-man spot over Les Walrond and Ryan O'Malley? Seriously? They're still protecting Walrond and O'Malley? Wow.

Walrond was taken off the 40-man last month.

how are bynum and coats still on the 40 man? Or even dopirak for that matter. I hope that bynum and coats don't end up being part of the 'young bench' that Lou wants to go with.

If Dopirak is dropped off the 40-man, a team can pick him up and stash him in the minors. It would be a bad move, better to trade him.

Which part?

From everything I've ever read, Dopirak's Defense has been below average or a work in progress. He doesn't have the speed to play anywhere else (unless they can turn him into a catcher)

Trading Dopirak now is better than letting him go for nothing which seems very likely to happen.

With Fox perhaps done as a catcher it seems logical that the Cubs would try him at 1st. With McGahee and Moore also in the running at 1st Dopirak might seem expendable.
