The Cubs have a wonderful leadoff guy to take his place and man is he fast. Hendry is there and striking while the iron is hot would be such a great move.

Ooooh, good thought. What could we get back? I am not very familiar with their minor leagues.

Do I feel bad for Rowand yes.

But he was out of control on that play. Utley clearly was calling him off. Rowand needs to play alot smarter on the field.

The Phillies could have lost the best young 2B in the game for an extended period of time.

You know, just to be safe, they should trade us Utley for Pierre. We'll keep him out of Rowand's way.

I didn't see the play, but if the centerfielder can get to the ball and calls off the other defenders, the secondbaseman has to get out of the way, no matter how adamantly he is calling for it. it's not a question of who is more talented. it's a matter of protocol to prevent just such occurrences.

good gosh..Utley would be so perfect for Cubs. Its not even funny.

What I would give for him to be in Cubbie blue. If I was the Cubs GM I would

offer a combination of any 3 prospects in the system...no one off limits.

Well from what I saw...Utley was clearing making a call for the ball..I didn't even see Rowand make a call..it appeared he was even backing off..but at the split second charged in again.

In one of our games this year we had a SS call for a short fly to CF just over 2nd, he caught it and then out of nowhere the CF dives right into him. Man, that was a pretty scary moment.

Throw in Izturis and we're good to go.

the other day in Houston, Izturis should have gotten out of Murton's way in foul territory. Murton was clearly calling for the ball. the infielders have to give way. that was scary for a second too, especially Murton's reaction afterwards. I thought he hurt his wrist the way he grabbed his glove.

pierre might be an ideal pick up for the phils.

he is a free agent so he is really a rent-a-player..2 months and then rowland(or someone else) is back for next season

he is playing his bext ball by far right now..it just doesn't make a difference on the cubs

also it should not change the cubs ability to resign him if they want to for next year. add to that we could get a prospect or 2 of any kind back in the mean time.

I agree he would be a good pickup for the Phillies, but I just can't see them making a deal to increase payroll right now-they forced the Yankees to take Lidle, who is also a FA at the end of the season and makes less than Pierre-so I doubt they are suddenly going to try to pick up some more payroll, even if it is only for a month and a half.

but at the trade deadline they weren't third in the wildcard and only two and a half out. I said at the time of the trade I couldn't see the Phillie fans not being outraged that they appeared to be giving up only 5 or 6 games out.

plus, they dumped ALOT of payroll between that and the Bell trade, and Pierre only has about a mill coming to him for the rest of the year. drop in the bucket to remain competetive and have a shot at the playoffs.

I doubt we could get much from the Phillies for Pierre... at least not enough to offset the two comp picks we can get for offering him arbitration this offseason.

That may be true. AT the very least, Hendry believes it is true and there likely won't be any move to deal Pierre.

The Cubs aren't going to get any comp picks for Pierre.

Do you mean because they are going to re-sign him, or because they won't offer him arbitration?

They will resign him.

I do too..I hope they offer him arbitration. If he declines, pick up the picks. If he accepts, sign him to a 1 year deal-I don't consider this that big of a problem, for I firmly believe Pierre will play better next year than he did this year (I think he'll have some up months and down months, but I don't think the down months will be as bad next year). I'm predicting a .345 OBP for him next year-which will be about 10 points better than the .335 I expect him to finish around this year. It won't be great, but it won't be a huge problem for one year. However, I want him only to be a placeholder for Pie in 08, and would be more upset if they signed Pierre to a multiyear deal-especially if it's 3 years or more.

I expect him to be as crappy in 2007 as he has been in 2005 and 2006.

I'm not saying he will be much better..I just think he will improve his numbers about the same amount from 06 to 07 as from 05 to 06-unless he falls off significantly from his current pace, .335+ is probably his final number this year, and so expecting a .345 next year is not that unreasonable, I don't think. Having Pierre at the top of the order with a .345 is far from ideal-but it won't kill your offense either.
