It has been learned that the Cubs told a Padres executive in 2002 that they were interested in hiring Bochy as their manager. The feeler went nowhere, and the Cubs went on to hire Dusty Baker.

Baker's contract is to expire after this season, and reports are that Baker will enter free agency in November. The Cubs' front office, meantime, still includes admirers of Bochy. Bochy's seven-figure salary is guaranteed through 2007.

That weird eye thing would get to me

I was working for the Reno Silver Sox of the California League when Bochy was manager of the Riverside Red Wave.

It was around 1992 or so and his back had been bothering him all year, but the final game of the season it went out on him and he had to lie on his back on the visiting clubhouse floor in Reno the whole game. I basically took care of him by running to the drug store, getting him food, etc. He had been a good guy all year whenever I had to deal with him, but he was especially cool that day. I was impressed with how friendly he was in spite of the obvious pain.

Doesn't mean he'd be a good manager for the Cubs, but he was a good guy that year, especially that day.

He's always seemed to me to be a less successful Dusty Baker. 3 playoff appearances, 1 WS appearance, and only 4 winning seasons out of 10. It's not like he's had bad teams on the field, but I don't know if he would be the best fit for the Cubs.

why pay bochy seven figures if someone as good can be had for less?

because it would be in keeping with the cubs' philosophy of overspending for mediocrity.

Do we really even need a manager?

Yes, somebody has to make out a different lineup combination everyday and burn out the pitching staff. And have a bunch of excuses after a losing game. Not easy to find someone like that!

I've watched a lot of Boch over the years - I lived in SD for a while - and I think he's damn good. He tends to overmanage at times, but he knows the game (unlike Baker) and tends to get the most out of the talent at his disposal. He's basically a players manager, but not afraid to be a red-ass when the situation calls for it. I think he'd be a very nice choice.

I just can't fathom why the Cubs aren't showing interest in Dierker. Didn't his whooping our asses all those years while he was in Houston get any attention?

Maybe he doesn't want to manage...
