I am watching the dodger / rockie game and the announcers said that Maddux said something along the lines of "it's good to be on a team where the players care about playing, etc ,etc, etc. . . ."

They said it was direct cut at the Cubs and that it was out of Maddux's character.

I've looked around the web, but haven't been albe to find anything.

Did any of you guys hear this, too?

i don't know if you're joking or not, but I can't imagine they'd make something up like that. They have no reason to.

It just sounds contrary to everything I've heard come out of Maddux's mouth. Maybe he did say something like that, I don't know, but my guess is that the announcer is reading something into a Maddux quote that probably isn't there.

Here is the quote:

“To me, (the trade) was like spring training all over again, or like opening day,” Maddux said. “Things weren't going as well as we would have liked in Chicago, but one plane ride and you're back in it.

“It's nice to be on a team where guys play hard and have respect for each other. I look forward to trying to win with these guys.”

well, at least we know that if hendry respects anyone it's maddux, so hopefully jimbo will pay attention.

I also remember seeing a quote from Maddux saying something to the effect that the reason he waited so long to sign with the Cubs, was because he had really wanted to play for the Dodgers in the first place and with the change in ownership(or management?) that year, the Dodgers never got around to making him an offer.

Maddux said when he left the Braves as a free agent after the 2003 season, he delayed picking a new team, hoping he could sign with the Dodgers. But the franchise was in the process of being sold, and thus in limbo. After the sale was completed, Maddux waited until general manager Paul DePodesta was hired on the eve of Spring Training, but no offer came and he ultimately signed a three-year deal with the Chicago Cubs after camp opened.

"I wanted the chance, but it never came up," he said. "That wasn't 'sort of' the reason I waited, that's the specific reason. I wanted all of the options in front of me to make the decision."

That was the prevailing rumor at the time. He was hesitant about returning to the Cubs.

I've said this in other threads and I realize it's Just My Opinion, but I think there's about zero chance of Maddux coming back to the Cubs as a pitcher.

For good reason.

I would rather play for the 2006 Dodgers than the 2006 Cubs also. The comments don't seem Maddux-esque and I don't think he meant to take a jab at the Cubs but it's how it came across. Either way, I still wish him well.

If it is a dig at the team, then I just lost alot of respect for Maddux. He's as culpable as anyone else of tanking after DLee got hurt. He went from Dr Jeckyll to Mr Hyde after his 5-0 start. He's the last guy to be talking about anyone performing or playing hard on the field.

Sometimes the truth hurts. Say what you want about Maddux, but I don't believe for one instant that he gave anything less than 100% out on the field. Even if what he said was directed at the Cubs, it is probably the truth, so what's the big deal? Some people were clamoring for Todd Walker to speak his mind and rip the organization. I think Maddux was just saying that when a team is in the race guys give it that extra effort.

I think his comments were taking out of context. The first and second quotes were prolly two different line of questions. Maddux wouldn't sit there and rip his teamates like that.
