I'd prefer Dierker to Girardi, though Joe wouldn't be a bad choice.

Considering I've seen pretty much zilch connecting the Cubs and Dierker in any managerial speculation in the media, I'd say the Girardi option is more likely, but then who knows...the media is probably speculating just as much as we are.

I find it quite unfortunate that Dierker hasn't been mentioned in connection with the Cubs job.

Maybe Bruce could ask Jim his thoughts on Dierker....(hint, hint)

Hendry: "We aren't looking at other managers right now. Dusty's the manager of this team right now, and together we're evaluating what talent we have.....yadda yadda.."

It's not that I don't like Giardi, but if he can't handle managerial problems in his first year with a ballclub, I'm not totally sure I'd want him for the Cubs.

What kind of managerial problems is he not handling? He asked the owner of the team not to yell at the Ump. I don't think he'll have that issue with the Trib...lol.

Man, the Marlins are fast becoming something like our major league affiliate. We keep them there until they're on the verge of stardom, and then we get them all.

I'd prefer Fredi Gonzalez over Girardi.

Can I ask why? I'd rather take a chance on Girardi because he's really done a nice job this year with the Marlins. Fredi has never managed before, yet I've been hearing about him for years. What makes you think that Fredi would be the better pick?

Has he expressed interest in managing again?

In particular, has he ever given any indication he would take a job in an organization other than the Astros.

If the answer is "no" to both of those questions, then the media probably just assumes he is not an option.

Whoops. Looks like I forgot the name of the Marlins owner and assumed it was a player.

Since Hendry's job will depend on his next hire I'm curious if he would go to a "new" guy like Joe. I'd like to see it happen and maybe since Joe is an ex liked Cub that might help.

Joe is new, but has also done some nice things with the Marlins, that Jim might see him as less of a long shot now. Or at least that's what I'm telling myself.

This thread is a tease.

I'll tell myself that too and yes, it is a tease. Sadly, not just for Joe but the thought Baker won't be in the Cub dugout in 2007.

I honestly don't clearly understand the love for Joe, can someone help me out with this? I know Baker isn't liked, I'm one of those people, however I respect this boards views and usually agree. Just curious on what exactly Joe would bring to this team.

I think Girardi would bring discipline, a better understanding of dealing with young players, and an intelligence gained from an engineering degree from Northwestern and his years as a cathcher in the majors.

I asked some of my South Florida friends about this after seeing this article. According to sports radio stations in Miami, Girardi and Loria have had a strained relationship pretty much since the begining. Loria assured Girardi that while salary would be reduced, it wouldn't be a wholesale firesale.

Well, every time you call someone up from an affiliate, you gotta send someone down to make room. ;)

Holy crap...according to ESPN, staffers were actually setting up for a press conference in the room where managerial changes have been announced in the past, after that Girardi/Loria spat...

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2543099

They have a room dedicated to announcing managerial changes?

It was just something that was noted in the ESPN article. I should have said "a room" not "the room"...:P Here's the quote from the source story in the Palm Beach Post:

During the team meeting, Marlins employees outside the clubhouse could be seen preparing the Dolphin Stadium interview room for a news conference. But none was held. Samson said Monday he was unaware that team employees had been preparing the interview room for a news conference. He also denied a rift between the front office and Girardi or his staff.

my wife bought me the Total Baseball Encyclopedia a couple years ago and i'm finally getting around to finishing it. it has this old magazine article about the playing and managerial life of rogers hornsby, and how he got fired and traded all the time because he argued with ownership.

this reminds me a little of that. i'd rather have girardi than dusty, but i don't think that girardi is a huge fan of hendry and macphail.

That only increases my interest in Joe.... :)

Does Cabrera have a similar out clause???

Obviously not, but what if the Marlins decide to move him in the offseason because of his impending salary increase, AND Girardi requested he be traded to the Cubs? In that scenario, the Cubs could make a deal for Cabrera AND Girardi, with some low-level pseudo-prospect thrown into the Cabrera deal to nab Girardi.

I know that's very very very far-fetched, but wouldn't it be great if Hendry solved two problems with one brilliant off-season move?

A snippet from an article in today's Sun-Sentinel:

An owner-manager relationship is always important but could be even more vital considering a potential catalyst in Chicago, where the struggling Cubs are expected to dismiss Dusty Baker at season's end. Girardi spent 10 seasons in the organization and is a native of Peoria, Ill., where his ailing father still lives.

A Cubs source said recently the team has "not even discussed" Girardi as a possible replacement, adding it was unlikely the team would be willing to swap a player or players as compensation.

"I would think we're probably not in that mode -- for anybody," the source said.

But if Girardi has an out clause or even a handshake understanding with Loria, the issue of compensation could be moot for someone who remains hugely popular in Chicago.

A National League source who has talked with the Marlins said he "would be surprised" if Girardi's original three-year contract -- which Girardi said in October did not include an out clause -- had been reworked to include one.

However, the NL source admitted that "it's possible" Loria and Girardi have a handshake understanding that would allow him to leave should the Cubs come calling.

"Jeffrey and Joe have all of these conversations [in private]," the source said.

The fact that the Cubs source would even say a word about a search for a possible replacement to Dusty should mean good things for those who were worried when Hendry said that he wouldn't be fired this season, fearing he was going to extend him. You don't talk about a potential search if you may extend your manager-at least that's very unlikely. As for Girardi, I certainly don't want to give up a player or players as compensation for him. If he had the out clause, I'd consider him just as much as some other candidates, but if he's going to cost a player while the other candidates wouldn't that would be a major black mark against him.

This thought crossed my mind as well.

Was he saying "we aren't in that mode" about trading prospects for a manager? Or was he saying we aren't in the looking for a new manager mode? It's not like the Cubs have been banned from talking about the manager position this year, they've addressed it quite frequently. Simply saying a word on the topic isn't enough for me to think much of anything.
